Tour de France Green Jersey Standings, Odds, and Predictions

The Tour de France green jersey is given to the best sprinter of this Grand Tour and so far in 2023, this particular category had been only a one-man race with the flying Belgian Jasper Philipsen able to win all 4 sprint finishes up to now. There is still an entire week to race though so, could a crash or accident alter the seemingly sealed destiny of this jersey? Here are the current Tour de France green jersey standings, odds and also our green jersey predictions.

Tour de France Green Jersey Standings

It has been all about one man so far. Especially after the legendary Mark Cavendish crashed out of the Tour during stage 8 Jasper Philipsen was left without much of a competition. Philipsen won 3 stages even with Cavendish in the mix, he added another win later in week 2. That’s why his lead at the top of the Tour de France green jersey rankings is so large.

Here are the top 5 riders in the Tour de France Green Jersey Classification after stage 17:

1) J. Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceunink) 323 points

2)  M. Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) 186 points

3) B. Coquard (Cofidis) 178 points

4) W. Van Aert (Jumob-Visma) 154 points

5) T. Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) 146 points

The most interesting rider to be in the top 4 sprinters is the 2-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar. His ability to charge and beat opponents during mountain stages gave him plenty of points. As things stand the amazing Slovenian is well on course to secure podium finishes in all 4 jersey categories – yellow, polka dot, green and white.

Tour de France Green Jersey Odds

Here are the top 5 riders placed based on their odds to become the 2023 Tour de France Best Sprinter:

Jasper Philipsen 1/100 (1.01) was 1/12 (1.08)

Wout Van Aert 33/1 (34.00) no change

Bryan Coquard 50/1 (51.00) was 16/1 (17.00)

Mads Pedersen 66/1 (67.00) was 14/1 (15.00)

Dylan Groenewegen 100/1 (101.00) was 66/1 (67.00)

Clearly, the runaway leader in the race for the Tour de France green jersey is considered to have already won this category. Two of his nearest pursuers are naturally given the next 2 best odds, but they need some kind of a miracle or a mishap to stand a chance.

Tour de France Green Jersey: Our Prediction

We can’t look beyond the flying Jasper Philipsen for the Tour de France green jersey. He is the best sprinter this year and has already won 4 stages. Of course, his odds make him hard to consider and our advice is look for a bet in this category only if you somehow see Philipsen not finishing the Tour de France due to an accident or a crash.

The only way we see anyone else putting on the green jersey is if Philipsen has to withdraw for some reason. Sprinters charge towards the line with over 60mph during sprint finishes and incidents happen often. If such an unfortunate thing happens to Philipsen then it gets very exciting who between Van Aert and Coquard could win the green jersey. Considering, that Coquard’s team Cofidis have the better train of the two teams when it comes to sprint finishes we back the Frenchman to edge this particular duel. Again, the chances for Philipsen failing to win this jersey are very slim. Still, this is the Tour de France so who knows what the next day could bring.
