The reigning world No. 1, Swiatek came into Dubai fresh after winning the Qatar Open, so her confidence was obviously at a very high level as she looks to add another trophy to her collection. So far, she’s done as well as she could hope for since she managed to reach the quarter-finals without dropping a set.
Her next opponent at the Dubai Open is tough one, Qinwen Zheng, but Swiatek obviously enters this match as an absolute favourite as well.
Iga Swiatek’s next match – Dubai Open Quarter-Finals vs Qinwen Zheng
After an relatively easy win over Stephens at the start of the tournament, the world No. 1 met with the Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina in the third round of the Dubai Open. Svitolina is currently ranked 20th in the WTA rankings, so this wasn’t an easy matchup for Swiatek. Despite that, Swiatek managed to dispatch of Svitolina in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) and secure her place in the quarter-finals against Qinwen Zheng.
Swiatek has been in great form to start the season, since she lost just once since the start of 2024. Granted, it was a tough loss to swallow because it came in the third round at the Australian Open, but still, Swiatek is proving this year once again why she’s been at the top of the rankings for so long.
Her next opponent is currently ranked 7th in the WTA rankings and the young Chinese had a dream start of the season since she achieved her best result at Grand Slams by reaching the Australian Open final. Zheng obviously has the quality to put up a fight against Swiatek, but the Polish player has the absolute advantage in their H2H record since she beat Zheng all in all five of their meetings so far.
Iga Swiatek’s 2024 campaign
After finishing her 2023 campaign with her first win at the WTA Finals, which put her back at the top of the WTA rankings, Swiatek started 2024 in the same rhythm, winning all of her matches at the United Cup.
However, she followed that up with a disappointing showing at the Australian Open, where she lost to Linda Noskova in the Third Round of the tournament, marking one of the worst results she had at Majors for a while.
Swiatek managed to put that loss behind her and return to her 2024 campaign triumphantly, by winning the Qatar Open. She achieved this by beating Elena Rybakina in the final in straight sets (7-6, 6-2). She is currently playing at the Dubai Open.
Current ATP ranking – how long is Swiatek on top of the WTA list?
In April 2022, Iga Swiatek became the first Polish player, male or female, to be ranked No. 1 in the world. Since then, Swiatek has been on top of the rankings for 75 consecutive weeks before losing the top spot to Aryna Sabalenka after the US Open.
