How does the NBA schedule work?
Each team plays 82 regular season games, 41 at home and 41 on the road. The 30 teams in the league are divided into two conferences that are further divided into three divisions, which play a major role in the schedule.
Each team faces its own division rivals four times in a season. Each team also faces six of the other teams from the conference four times per season and the remaining four conference rivals three times. Finally, each team will play the teams from the other conference twice per season.
This asymmetrical structure of the NBA schedule means that the strength of the schedule may slightly vary from season to season, but the league has made sure that over five seasons, each team will have played 80 games against their division (20 games against each opponent, 10 at home, 10 on the road), 180 games against the rest of their conference (18 games against each opponent, 9 at home, 9 on the road), and 150 games against the other conference (10 games against each team, 5 at home, 5 on the road).
What are the key dates on the NBA schedule?
The 2023-24 NBA regular season will be played from October 24, 2023, to April 14, 2024.
For the first time ever, the season will feature an NBA in-season tournament. The tournament will take place from November 3 to December 9. The teams will be divided into six intraconference groups of five teams.
Tuesdays and Fridays during November will feature group games against each of the other teams in the group, and these games will still count as regular season games. The semifinals and the finals of the in-season tournament will take place in Las Vegas.
One of the key dates on the NBA schedule is Christmas Night, when five games will be played one after another. The 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend will take place from 16-18 February in Indianapolis.
The NBA Playoffs start on April 16, 2024, and the NBA Finals at the beginning of June.
