The Philadelphia 76ers have improved their NBA playoff odds with a commanding Game 1 victory, 121-101 over the Brooklyn Nets. The 76ers are now a 10.5-point favorite against the Nets for Game 2 this Monday evening.
These odds from William Hill were correct at the time of writing.
Philadelphia 76ers vs Brooklyn Nets – Game Predictions
Contents
The 76ers won each quarter in Game 1, but there was enough good play from the Nets to think they can close the gap in Game 2. Brooklyn’s Mikal Bridges was impressive in his team playoff debut with 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting.
Prediction 1: Brooklyn Nets to Cover the Spread (+10.5)
Incredible stat: Brooklyn is 19-3 this season when shooting at least 7.5 percentage points better than the opponent, but all three losses were to the 76ers. The Nets shot 55.7% from the field compared to 47.2% for the 76ers on Saturday, but they lost the turnover battle (19-8), rebound battle (38-35), and missed 5 free throws while the 76ers were perfect (16-for-16). The Nets cover 60% of the time as a road underdog, and it is hard to win back-to-back playoff games by double digits. Look for the Nets to cut down the turnovers and play a closer game in Game 2.
Prediction 2: Under 213.5 Points
When playing on equal rest, the over hits 40% of the time in Brooklyn games, the lowest rate in the NBA this season. When having one day off, the over is a league-low 38% in Brooklyn games. But beyond that, let’s play to the regression to the mean in a playoff series. Brooklyn likely will not shoot 55.7% again in this game, and the 76ers likely will not hit 21 threes or 100% on free throws. Brooklyn needs to play with more determination to avoid the 0-2 hole, so we are counting on an uglier defensive battle in this one.
76ers vs Nets Preview – Bridges Cannot Do This Alone
The Nets are 14-3 when they shoot better than 54% from the field this year, but all the losses are to the 76ers. They need to crack the code to avoid falling 0-6 to the 76ers this year.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers did not disappoint in Game 1 as they seek their best playoff run in over 20 years. James Harden dished out 13 assists after he led the regular season in assists per game. Joel Embiid only had 26 points, but he was plus-18 in 33 minutes and made all 11 of his free throws. Tobias Harris was also solid with 21 points. P.J. Tucker played very good defense with 5 steals.
Brooklyn Nets
Mikal Bridges was a bright spot for the Nets in Game 1 with 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting. It is his second 30-point playoff game in his career. But he will need more help as former Phoenix teammate Cameron Johnson (18 points) was the only other Brooklyn player with more than 14 points. The Nets were too sloppy with the basketball as they accumulated 19 turnovers with six players having multiple giveaways.
76ers vs Nets Head to Head Record In 2023
The 76ers are now 5-0 against the Nets this season. The wins have come by 9, 4, 3, 29, and 20 points. Game 1 was the first time in the four meetings where starters played for both teams that the 76ers won by double digits.
