After the fiasco of the last World Cup in 2019 when the Americans were knocked out in the quarterfinals by France and finished only 7th Team USA is determined to get back to the final in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The Stars and Stripes might have no big stars like LeBron James or Steph Curry in their ranks but the U.S. assembled an All-Star coaching staff for this tournament. Golden State’s Steve Kerr (9-time NBA Champion) leading a group that has the LA Clippers’ Tyronn Lue (3-time NBA Champion), Miami’s Erik Spoelstra (2-time NBA Champion) and Gonzaga’s Mark Few as his assistants. This coaching staff just announced the final 12-man USA roster for the 2023 FIBA World Cup and here we look in more detail at it.

The star-studded coaching staff of Team USA opted to select mainly young rising stars for this tournament and here are the 12 men honoured to defend the Stars and Stripes jersey during the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Position | Player | Team |
F | Paolo Banchero | Orlando Magic |
F | Mikal Bridges | Brooklyn Nets |
G | Jalen Brunson | New York Knicks |
G | Anthony Edwards | Minnesota Timberwolves |
G | Tyrese Haliburton | Indiana Pacers |
G | Josh Hart | New York Knicks |
F | Brandon Ingram | New Orleans Pelicans |
F | Jaren Jackson Jr. | Memphis Grizzlies |
F | Cam Johnson | Brooklyn Nets |
C | Walker Kessler | Utah Jazz |
F | Bobby Portis | Milwaukee Bucks |
G | Austin Reaves | LA Lakers |
The roster is filled with young rising stars from the NBA. The only veteran, if you can call him that is Bobby Portis. It’s clear that the main creative force and scoring will come from the 3 young NBA stars Jalen Brunson, Anthony Edwards, and Tyrese Haliburton.
The rim will be protected by the 2023 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. and All-Rookie First Team Walker Kessler.
Team USA’s coaching staff were delighted that Paolo Banchero chose the Stars and Stripes over Italy and the aggressive Laker Austin Reaves decided to remove his option to represent Germany by also accepting the Team USA invitation.
Here is what Steve Kerr had to say after the final Team USA roster was announced: “We have a good mix of young NBA players and those who helped us qualify for the World Cup, all of who will play a huge role in our success in Manila, as we continue to develop the national team pipeline for years to come.”
FIBA World Cup USA odds
The USA are the expected top favourites to win the 2023 FIBA World Cup title with 4/9 (1.44) odds. No other team comes even close in the odds to the Stars and Stripes, so despite their young roster, they are still seen as the team that should win it all easily. Will that happen? Well, we’ll have to watch and see.
