Panathinaikos vs Baskonia prediction and odds

Both Panathinaikos and Baskonia started the new season in the EuroLeague in an unconvincing fashion. Both sides sit at 1-3 as they are about to face each other in Athens. This record is particularly bad from Baskonia’s perspective as they played 3 of their first 4 games at home. Panathinaikos lost twice already in overtime. Who can improve and get back in the playoff picture?

Panathinaikos vs Baskonia – game predictions

Below are our Panathinaikos vs Baskonia predictions. You can find more EuroLeague predictions here.

Prediction 1: Under 163.5 total points @ 1/2 (1.50)

With our first free betting tip, we suggest that there will be no more than 163 total points scored in this match. A cagey battle can be expected with both teams not scoring that many points this season. None of Panathinaikos’ four games so far reached the 160-point mark in regular time. Also, Baskonia tend to struggle to score the basket on their visits to PAO. The Spaniards scored 70 or fewer points in 3 of their last 5 away games vs Panathinaikos.

Prediction 2: Luca Vildoza under 9.5 points @ 7/10 (1.70)

Our second prediction is that Luca Vildoza from Panathinaikos won’t score more than 9 points. These days the Argentinian is coming off the bench so he plays fewer minutes than in previous years. He got to double digits scoring in 2 of the 4 matches so far, but that was because 2 of PAO’s matches went to overtime. Vildoza scored more than 10 points only once even in these circumstances so far and that’s why we don’t think he will do it again now.

These odds were correct at the time of writing.

Panathinaikos vs Baskonia preview – which team wants it most?

Both sides need to improve at both ends of the floor and the one that shows more desire and hunger is likely to win this match.

Panathinaikos news, injuries, and starting lineups

Panathinaikos could have easily been entering this game with a 3-1 record. Instead, they come into it 1-3 after losing twice in overtime. Both against Olympiacos and in their last outing vs Maccabi PAO threw away large leads in the fourth period to allow overtime.

Managing the last 10 minutes better should be a priority. Jerian Grant is generally a solid ball-handler but in most matches, he starts to lose focus late on. So far, 75% of Grant’s turnovers have come inside the final period.

PAO are a bit light on the power forward position for this match. Mantzoukas is expected to overcome illness on time but he is likely to be limited to no more than 10 minutes. The main starter in the role Papapetrou remains sidelined with a leg injury sustained several weeks ago.

Panathinaikos Injury Report:

Lefteris Mantzoukas PF – probable

Ioannis Papapetrou PF – ruled out

Panathinaikos Starting Lineup:

Jerian Grant, Marius Grigonis, Kostas Sloukas, Juan Hernangomez, Aleksander Balcerowski

Baskonia lost two winnable home games in the recent double-week and that’s why they dropped to 1-3, despite playing only once on the road so far. Both against Zalgiris and Bayern last week the Spaniards had problems defending the perimeter. They allowed both those sides to shoot north of 45% from beyond the arc.

Baskonia had a similar issue last year when they kept collapsing too deep in the pocket. Better perimeter defence is what the coach preached and demanded. The question is will the players deliver?

Starting small forward Moneke is doubtful. The only player certain to miss is rarely used anyway, Diez.

Baskonia Injury Report:

Daniel Diez PF – ruled out

Chime Moneke SF – doubtful

Baskonia Starting Lineup:

Markus Howard, Codi Miller-McIntyre, Tadas Sedekerskis, Matthew Costello, Khalifa Diop

Panathinaikos vs Baskonia head-to-head record since 2000

Every year the clashes between the sides produce spectacles and there is no team with clear dominance. Panathinaikos hold a slender 18-16 lead in the overall wins, largely thanks to them winning 5 of the first 6 games between the teams in the early 00s.
