The Boomers suffered a heartbreaking end to what was a great World Cup back in 2019. Australia reached the semifinals but then suffered consecutive defeats and missed the medals with the 4th place hurting a lot. The Boomers made positive strides ever since and they keep adding more and more NBA players to their roster. In the 2020 Olympics Australia officially won their first-ever medal, the bronze. Can they win a medal from the 2023 FIBA World Cup too?
The Boomers are on the podium!!
“We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I don’t know whether to laugh, cry, smile, it’s a lot of emotions.”- Patty Mills.
“It’s time to bring the Olympic medal home.” 🥉

Below we have the FIBA World Cup Australia roster with a dramatic last-minute change made to the 12-man squad.
FIBA World Cup 2023 Australia roster
Contents
The star-studded coaching staff of Team USA opted to select mainly young rising stars for this tournament and here are the 12 men honoured to defend the Stars and Stripes jersey during the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Position | Player | Team |
G | Patty Mills | Atlanta Hawks |
G | Josh Giddey | OKC Thunder |
G | Dyson Daniels | New Orleans Pelicans |
G | Chris Goulding | Melbourne United (AUS) |
G | Dante Exum | Dallas Mavericks |
G | Josh Green | Dallas Mavericks |
F | Matisse Thybulle | Portland Trail Blazers |
F | Joe Ingles | Orlando Magic |
F | Xavier Cooks | Washington Wizards |
F | Jack White | OKC Thunder |
F | Nick Kay | Shimano Susanoo Magic (JAP) |
C | Duop Reath | Qingdao Eagles (CHN) |
The roster is without the starting centre Jack Lansdale who sustained an ankle injury in a warmup match and will miss the entire tournament. His absence will be felt as he has been a beast for Australia in the paint in recent years.
Still, with the nice mixture of veterans and young blood the Boomers World Cup roster looks very solid. There are 10 NBA players on the roster. Veterans Mills and Ingles will be guiding the rising NBA stars Giddey and Daniels through their first major international tournament. The depth is good and the bench should be contributing well. The one issue is how well the last-minute inclusion Duop Reath will protect the paint.
Josh Giddey is expected to lead the team both in scoring and assists during this World Cup and the 20-year-old is excited to finally represent the Boomers. Here is what he said recently: “I’ve always dreamed of playing for the Boomers and representing Australia, so to get this opportunity is really special and I’m looking forward to competing at the World Cup. There’s a lot of talent in this squad and I think we’ve got a good chance of matching it with every team – I’m excited for the challenge and to see what we can produce as a group on the world stage.”
FIBA World Cup Australia odds
The Boomers are the fourth favourites to win the 2023 FIBA World Cup title with 9/1 (10.00) odds. Their odds will likely widen a bit now Lansdale will certainly miss the tournament. Still, Australia will be among the favourites to challenge for the medals again. Will that happen? Well, we’ll have to watch and see.
