The new Premier League season is finally upon us and the curtain-raiser for the 2023/24 is set to be Burnley vs Man City on Friday the 11th of August. The game sees last season’s Championship winner take on the reigning Premier League champions in a match that sees Vincent Kompany come up against former boss, Pep Guardiola. Ahead of the game, we’ve put together some free tips and predictions to mull over.
The Best Burnley vs Man City Prediction and Picks
Contents
Erling Haaland to score anytime
Although Erling Haaland has gone six games without a goal for Man City, keeping the Norweigan goal machine is still going to be a tall order for the Burnely defence. Haaland started last season in explosive fashion and although he will find it difficult to score at the same rate as he did last Autumn, we expect him to start hot again this time around.
City, and Haaland, looked sluggish at times during the Community Shield last weekend, however, that shouldn’t count for anything when they begin their title defence on Friday night.
Over 2.5 goals
Last season, Burnley scored more goals (87) than anyone else in the Championship while City also outscored everyone in the Premier League with 94 goals. Kompany is unlikely to change his side’s style too much, especially in front of what will be an excited Turf Moor, so expect this game to be an open one with a fair few goals going in.
Both teams to score
As mentioned, Burnley were the most open and free-flowing team in the Championship last season so it would be a huge surprise if they start this season with a more defensive mindset. Meanwhile, Guardiola’s City are renowned for throwing as many people forward as possible to heap pressure on their opponents. This should result in gaps all over the pitch, something both teams will look to exploit.
Burnley vs Man City: The Clarets are back in the big time
Burnley
After a dominant season in the Championship, Vincent Kompany will be itching to see how his side gets on in the Premier League and what better way to find out than to face the best team in the country. Kompany has added a few new players to his squad this summer including James Trafford and Zeki Amdouni, both of whom could make their debuts on Friday.
Man City
Last season, Manchester City famously won the treble in what turned out to be the greatest season in the club’s history. This time around, Guardiola’s men will be looking to become the first team in history to win four consecutive Premier League titles. They have lost a few important players this summer, including Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan but they will still feel they have enough to go all the way.
Burnley vs Man City Head-to-Head Record and Form
Burnley and Man City have faced each other 110 times in history, with the Blues coming out on top in 55 of those encounters. Recently, the head-to-record doesn’t make great reading for Burnley with City winning the last 11 competitive fixtures between the two clubs.
The form of the two teams in competitive matches coming into this one is as follows.
