Game 6 always means elimination is on the table in the NBA playoffs, and the Phoenix Suns must get more out of their superstar duo if they want to keep their season alive against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.
These odds from William Hill were correct at the time of writing.
Phoenix Suns vs Denver Nuggets – Game Predictions
Contents
The Suns are a 3-point home favorite with a total of 226 points. In NBA series where the home team wins the first five games, the team up 3-2 (Denver) still wins the series 88.3% of the time (53-7). Their Game 6 record is also 34-26 (.567), so the road team does generate a win in this situation more often than not.
Prediction 1: Phoenix Suns to Cover the Spread (-3)
Denver played some exceptional offense in Phoenix in Games 3-4, but the Suns were just better and playing faster without Chris Paul. They got incredible games from Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, though neither shot that well in Game 5. But facing elimination, look for them to bring their best against a Denver defense that has not been impressive in this series. Jamal Murray also has been off with his deep shots the last several games. The Suns are 29-8 SU as a home favorite this season, and this is a small spread for a team that has seen every playoff game decided by 5-plus points this season. Take Phoenix to extend this to Game 7.
Prediction 2: Devin Booker Over 31.5 Points
It was never sustainable for Booker to shoot 79.1% like he did in Games 3-4, but he can do better at home than he did in Denver in Game 5 with 42.1% shooting and 28 points. Four of Booker’s top five games this postseason have been at home, but more importantly, he has gone over 31.5 points in 5-of-6 Phoenix wins this postseason. If we are taking the Suns to cover, then we must like Booker to go over in scoring too.
Suns vs Nuggets Preview – Make Jokic a One-Man Show?
The Suns had success at home in this series by allowing Nikola Jokic to become a dominant scorer while doing their best to limit the supporting cast. We will see if they can repeat that strategy in Game 6.
Phoenix Suns News, Injuries, and Starting Lineups
Chris Paul is unlikely to play once again in Game 6 due to his groin injury. Cameron Payne will continue starting in his place at point guard. The Suns also have some concerns about center Deandre Ayton, who is questionable with a rib injury. However, Jock Landale has been getting good minutes lately in the event that the Suns need to rely more on their backup center. But this game is largely on Booker and Durant to deliver for the top-heavy Suns.
Phoenix Suns Injury Report:
- Chris Paul (groin) is doubtful to play.
- Deandre Ayton (rib) is questionable.
Phoenix Suns Starting Lineup:
Cameron Payne, Devin Booker, Josh Okogie, Kevin Durant, and Deandre Ayton.
Denver Nuggets News, Injuries, and Starting Lineups
The Nuggets remain one of the healthiest teams left in the playoffs. Jokic is playing great and routinely putting up triple-doubles. But we will see if they can repeat the success of the supporting cast in Game 5 when Bruce Brown scored 25 points off the bench and Michael Porter Jr. made five 3s. Jamal Murray is someone to keep an eye on as he is only shooting 18.2% from deep over the last four games after starting this series 6-of-10.
Denver Nuggets Injury Report:
- No injuries to report ahead of Game 6.
Denver Nuggets Starting Lineup:
Jamal Murray, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Michael Porter Jr., Aaron Gordon, and Nikola Jokic.
Suns vs Nuggets Head to Head Record In 2023
The Nuggets have a 5-4 edge in the series this season, including a 5-2 record when Jokic plays. Every Denver win has been by double digits too this postseason.
