Monty Williams Hired By The Detroit Pistons On Record Contract

The Suns fired Monty Williams after their round 2 exit from the 2023 NBA Playoffs. Now the head coach with the most NBA wins from 2021 onward has been hired by the team with the worst NBA record this season (17-65) the Detroit Pistons on what seems to be a record-breaking contract.

Monty stayed out of a job for just over a month and not just that but it seems he has just become the highest-paid head coach in NBA History.

Monty Williams asked to rebuild the Detroit Pistons

Despite still not being introduced to the media properly the 2021-22 NBA Coach of the Year Monty Williams has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons by the owner Tom Gores.

“I couldn’t be more proud to have Monty joining us at this important time to lead us into the next decade of our future,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a release. “He embodies all of the qualities we want in a leader for our Pistons franchise, and most importantly a teacher and mentor for our players. He will have an impact on every aspect of our franchise, on and off the court. After spending some time with Monty, it’s clear that he’s found a unique balance between achieving victory at the highest level while at the same time nurturing a culture of growth, development and inspiration,” Gores’ statement continued. “I’m beyond excited. This is a huge win for us.”

This ‘huge win’ seems to be coming at a huge price too as it seems Monty Williams has just become the highest-paid head coach in the entire history of the NBA.

Details we know about the richest coaching contract in NBA History

The 2022 NBA Coach of the Year Monty Williams was not even among the top 10 paid coaches while at the Phoenix Suns despite being the coach with the most NBA wins over the last 3 years and leading the Suns to the NBA Finals in 2022.

However, his 6-year contract with the Pistons is set to make NBA History as now Monty Williams is officially the highest-paid head coach in the game of basketball. Here are some details of his lucrative contract.

Monty has signed a contract worth $78.5 million guaranteed over 6 years. There’s more to that though as the Pistons have given themselves the option to keep Williams for 7th and 8th year. If they execute that option the contract will exceed $100 million. For the first 6 years, Monty Williams is getting $12 million a year guaranteed, up to now the highest-paid coach was the Spurs legend Greg Popovich at $11.5 million a year.

Clearly delighted to have secured the most profitable head coach contract in NBA History here was what Monty Williams had to say:

“A week ago, I was not sure what the future would hold,” Williams said in the team’s release. “But, after talking with Tom and Troy (Weaver), I was excited hearing their vision for the Pistons going forward. They had a thoughtful plan and I am so appreciative of the emphasis they placed on the personal side of this business. They showed tremendous consideration for me and my family throughout this process.”

Can Monty Williams justify his wages? Can the coach with the most wins over the last 3 seasons transform the fortunes of the team with the worst record this year? The future will certainly look exciting again in the Motor City and we can’t wait to see what Monty can do in Detroit.
