The 2023 NBA Draft is shaping up to be an exciting one with the entire league on a hype alert as the French prodigy Victor Wembanyama is about to enter the league. He is by far not the only talented youngster that will land in the NBA this season though. Among the other youngsters expected to achieve promising careers are the twin brothers Amen and Auser Thompson. The twins are projected to become the first siblings in NBA History to be drafted as top 10 picks. Their family story shows that they deserve all that, with the entire family coming from a poor ghetto upbringing to nurture and guide the twins to their ultimate goal, to become professional basketball players for NBA franchises.
Amen and Ausar Thompson’s Parents
Amen and Ausar Thompson, Amen being the older twin by a full minute and twelve seconds, were born in San Leandro, California. Their father is Troy Thompson and for the majority of his life, he has laboured hard as a fruit picker and construction worker. The twins’ mother is Maya Thompson. Her main job for several decades was as an administrator in a care home. She has also been on benefits for the best part of 5 years after losing her job 2 years after the twins were born on 30th January 2003.
Both Troy and Maya are of African-American origins and come from families that have lived in California for generations. The two parents have shown great dedication and sacrifice for their kids. Troy Thompson is known to e driving the twins for tens of hours across the roads of America so they could play basketball, or attend practices.
With the twins showing great passion for basketball since age 7, the family decided to home-school them for the next few years so they can focus on developing their skills. Maya Thompson left her job to do that and this is another clear sign of how dedicated the parents of the boys are.
The ultimate sacrifice was as a family was made during the twins’ eighth-grade year. The Thompson family relocated to Ford Lauderdale, Florida with the sole purpose for the twins to enter the basketball program at Pine Crest School. This move is about to prove hugely beneficial for Amen and Auser as their development shot in an upward curve ever since, with the twins expected to be selected inside the top 10 picks in the upcoming draft.
Amen and Ausar Thompson’s Siblings
Amen and Auser have only one other sibling, their older brother Troy Jr Thompson. He also played basketball at the high school level. However, problems with the law after a gun-related incident saw him expelled from his high school’s basketball program. Troy has struggled to find his path since then but a series of night courses saw him just graduating as a civil rights lawyer and it seems he will be pursuing a career in that field.
