Amen’s Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
Amen Thompson is arguably the most explosive athlete out there among the 2023 class. His ability to attack the rim on transition saw him lead his City Reapers to the league title in the Overtime Elite league this season. Thompson led the entire league with his 2.4 steals per game and he proved to everyone that he is a top-class defender. Taller than the average point guard Thompson can easily guard bigger players.
He was the main ball handler for the City Reapers this season and showed his best basketball when surrounded by spacers on the floor. Amen’s quickness and explosiveness help him to blow past defenders and finish at the rim. He’s a very good passer too and spot shooters benefited often from his precise dimes.
Undoubtedly Amen’s 2 main strengths are his explosiveness in transition and his stellar defensive skills.
Weaknesses
There is no secret what Amen Thompson’s big weakness is. He is a very poor shooter. He’s been inconsistent both from mid-range and the three-pointers. He shot just 23% from behind the arc this season. He also shot only 54% from the free-throw line. Clearly, Thompson will struggle if he fails to improve his jump shot.
The other weakness of Amen is his inability to stay out of foul trouble. In nearly 40% of his team’s matches this season Amen committed 2 or more offensive fouls. This could be problematic against smarter and better defenders, with Amen still not fully aware of how to attack the paint aggressively without being penalised for charges.
NBA Player Comparison
Amen Thompson’s stats and playing style clearly remind us of young Ben Simmons and Russel Westbrook. He has the potential to establish himself as a starting point guard in the league. Some even see Amen as good as young LeBron James but we think this is a stretch too far. Expect Amen to go downhill and attack the rim just like Simmons (in his prime) and Westbrook. He’s as good a passer as both stars too, so finding open teammates shouldn’t be hard for Amen.
NBA Draft Projection
We believe that despite his poor shooting stats Amen Thompson will be a top 6 draft pick. We think he will go between 4 and 6 slots, with Houston and Detroit being the strongest candidates to select him.
