Our Betting Tips and Predictions for Tour de France Stage 12
After a thrilling stage 12 of many breakaways and small climbs saw the Spaniard Izegirre end a 7-year gap to win a Tour stage the set is now staged for the big guns to fight it out for the yellow jersey. Stage 13 is all about the climbers. The relatively short 137-kilometre stage starts flat but it finishes with the 17.4 km climb to the top of Grant Colombier. With the gradient for the climb 7.1% but rising to 9.3% for the final 3.4 km this stage will be all about the pure climbers and the main GC contenders.
Our Outright Prediction: Tadej Pogacar @ 11/8 (2.38)
The 2021 and 2022 Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar knows how to win at the top of Grand Colombier. Young Pogacar’s star rose exactly with the Slovenian winning the stage of the 2020 Tour that finished at the top of this monster climb.
Pogacar trails the yellow jersey only by 17 seconds at the start of the stage. The 2-time Tour winner and last year’s runner-up also managed to gain team and outpace Vingegaard in the last 2 mountain stages. Pogacar certainly knows how to climb as he won the Poke dot jersey for King of the Mountains both in the 2020 and 2021 Tour editions.
With all that said and with the 2 big rivals for the top spot expected to lock horns in an epic battle at the Colombier we back the Slovenian to triumph again.
Our Each-way Prediction: Jonas Vingegaard @ 1/2 (1.50)
With our safer each-way betting tip, pays off if the rider finishes in the top 3, we back the current yellow jersey holder Jonas Vingegaard to be on the podium at the end of the stage. This Tour de France stage 13 prediction follows the logic of what we said above. When Vingegaard and Pogacar battle it against each other there hasn’t been any other rider able to keep up with them. This was the case both last year and during the first few stages in the mountains of the 2023 Tour.
Vingegaard was beaten to the top of the hill in the last 2 battles with Pogacar. The Dane dominated back in stage 5 though when he took the yellow jersey. Even if he fails to beat the Slovenian this time we sure believe that Vingegaard will be able to stay close.
Our Dark Horse Prediction: Pierre Latour @ 125/1 (126.00)
Since it is Bastille Day we had to go with a French rider as our dark horse. The local riders always push themselves a bit more on that emblematic day and of all the French candidates for the win we opted to go for a proper dark horse in Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies). Latour has never won a stage at the Tour in his career and this explains his odds. However, the 29-year-old has been close several times.
Latour is no threat to the GC, so if he can be among a successful breakaway and enters the final climb with at least a 2-3 minute lead then why not for him to win the stage? Latour is a capable climber and he has 8 top-5 finishes in mountainous stages at the Tour over the years. Could this be the year he finally wins a stage?
Tour de France Stage 13 Odds
Now we’ve made our individual picks here are the odds for the top 10 favourites to win Stage 13:
Tadej Pogacar 11/8 (2.38)
Jonas Vingegaard 7/2 (4.50)
Michael Woods 14/1 (15.00)
Simon Yates 16/1 (16.00)
Felix Gall 18/1 (19.00)
Thibaut Pinot 25/1 (26.00)
Valentin Madouas 25/1 (26.00)
Giulio Ciccone 25/1 (26.00)
Jai Hindley 33/1 (34.00)
Tom Pidcock 33/1 (34.00)
Our main 2 picks from above are the top 2 favourites for the stage and understandably so.
The 2-time Tour de France winner (2021 and 2022) Tadej Pogacar and the current yellow jersey holder and 2022 Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard are expected to start an epic 3-day battle in the Alps during stage 13. From what we have seen so far none other rider could keep up with them when they start attacking each other. Naturally, this explains why their odds are so much shorter than everyone else’s.
The only chance for somebody else to win the stage is if a breakaway enters the final climb with a healthy lead.
