The 19th edition of the FIBA World Cup will take place from August 25th to September 10th in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. As the 32 national basketball teams battle for supremacy some of the top NBA stars opted to play but others opted to rest ahead of the new NBA season. Here we take a look at the status of the freshly crowned 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid. Who is JoJo playing for anyway?
Which country Joel Embiid represents?
Philadelphia 76ers emblematic big man Joel Embiid is born in Cameroon. However, just within the last 12 months he has obtained both French and US citizenship, so now the freshly crowned NBA MVP has a lot of suitors. He has a decision to make for which country he should play. In the past he hasn’t been involved internationally with anyone.
The French believe they have his commitment. The Americans try to prize him away though. Who will one of the most talented NBA players represent?
“Not this year,” Collet said about Embiid playing for France. “We don’t know. It’s up to him to decide. We wait for his decision, and we hope (he chooses France).”

What are the reigning NBA-MVP Joel Embiid’s summer plans and do they include a FIBA World Cup?
Joel Embiid backed out of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Considering, that he has planned his wedding during the tournament this was to be expected. Obviously, in the next few weeks, Embiid’s plans include partying, entering a marriage arrangement and enjoying a honeymoon. Hard to fit a competitive basketball tournament among all that!

The big drama going forward will be who Joel Embiid decides to represent in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The French still hope they’ll get him but Team USA might have an ambush plan up their sleeve.
