Manchester City and Arsenal will do battle at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening in perhaps what is the biggest fixture of the Premier League season so far, as the winner of the game will be in pole position to take the 2022/23 title.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal currently lead the English top-flight on 75 points after 32 games played as they look to win the Premier League for the first time since 2003/04.
However, the Gunners have stumbled recently, recording three draws in their last three games including last Friday’s 3-3 tie with basement side Southampton.
Pep Guardiola’s City sit in second place and the Gunner’s recent form will have given them hope that they can achieve a historic treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles this season.
The side trail Arsenal by five points but have two games in hand. Should they emerge victorious from the Etihad clash, they’ll be confident of retaining their league title.
This article will take a look at the head-to-head record of City and Arsenal ahead of tomorrow’s pivotal fixture.
Manchester City vs Arsenal Head-To-Head Record: Overall Head-To-Head Record
Iterations of the two historic clubs first met in November 1893 when Woolwich Arsenal and Ardwick played out a competitive fixture and since then, the sides have met on 200 occasions.
Overall, Arsenal have won 98 times and drawn 45 matches with Manchester City, who have beaten the Gunners 64 times in total.
However, City have been much the better side in recent years and the Sky Blues have won seven consecutive fixtures against Arsenal. In the sides’ last 15 meetings, Man City have been victorious on 14 occasions while Arsenal have defeated their Northern rivals just once.
City have overcome Arsenal twice already this season, beating the Gunners 1-0 in the FA Cup fourth round and 3-1 at the Emirates in the Premier League in February.
Arsenal’s best results over City have come in the FA Cup while they last defeated the side in a league fixture in December of 2015 after goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.
Since then, the Gunners have achieved just one draw at the Etihad, which came in 2016.
Man City vs Arsenal: Last Five Head-to-Head matches
Since the arrival of Pep Guardiola, Man City have been one of the top sides in Europe and been a difficult team to stop for any club.
Arsenal have been one of many teams to suffer at the hands of the Qatari-owned club, particularly as they have found themselves in a state of flux in the last decade as Arsene Wenger’s power waned while his replacement Unai Emery struggled to make progress with the side.
However, Mikel Arteta’s arrival as manager of the Gunners in 2020 markeda turning point for the North-London side. They went on to beat City in the FA Cup final that season and, with a revamped squad, they have been the best side in the Premier League for much of the season.

This tie will be fascinating to watch in terms of the strikers at play. Gabriel Jesus netted 24 league goals in 84 appearances for City before making the move to Arsenal this season. Having worked with Guardiola for several years and knowing the system, the Gunners may look to him to exploit the home side. The Brazilian has suffered with injuries this season but will be looking to add to his nine goals against his old club.
Bukayo Saka has been the man Arsenal have turned to in recent ties versus City, though his goals have never seen his team rewarded with a win recently. Perhaps Wednesday evening is the night that changes?
For City, Erling Haaland has lifted the goalscoring burden with ease this season. The striking sensation has broken all sorts of records already and has plenty of games remaining to continue that trend. He’s tasted blood versus Arsenal before this year and will be eager to do so again.
Surprisingly, defensive midfielder Rodri has been to the forefront of City’s goalscoring exploits versus the Gunners in recent times. Another goal from the Spaniard could seal yet another title for Manchester’s Blue side.
