Erling Haaland purportedly will be offered a lucrative contract extension by Manchester City less than a year after joining the club from Borussia Dortmund.
Haaland’s first season in England has been a resounding success, with the Norwegian forward scoring 47 goals in all competitions.
Haaland’s release clause at Borussia Dortmund was activated by City for just £51 million last summer and given his stats, the striker has been a resounding success at the club.
The serial goal scorer’s contract at the Etihad Stadium included a £175 million release clause that could be triggered by non-Premier League clubs in 2024.
City Set to Offer Haaland New Contract Deal in Bid to Keep Him at Club
The Athletic has recently reported that the clause has been removed and the club is now prepared to offer a new contract to their star striker to retain his services for the foreseeable future.
The clause was removed after Pep Guardiola penned a new contract in November that will keep him with the Premier League champions through the summer of 2025.
Haaland is reportedly admired by Real Madrid and aspires to play at the Santiago Bernabeu, but he is very happy at City, and the club believes he would be prepared to agree to improved terms on his contract, which runs through 2027.
Although City have removed Haaland’s 2024 release clause, it is uncertain if any additional release clauses may activate during the remainder of his contract.
Last year, The Daily Mail newspaper in the UK revealed exclusively that Haaland earns a staggering £865,000 per week due to a succession of substantial, almost-guaranteed bonuses, despite his basic salary being comparable to that of City’s other highest-paid players.
This enables him to earn approximately £45 million per year while starring for the Premier League club.
Potential Haaland Commitment Will Delight City Fans
The possibility of Haaland committing his long-term future to City will be music to the ears of the club’s supporters, who have been blown away by his performance since arriving in England.
This season, he has scored 32 goals in only 28 league matches, placing him nine goals ahead of his closest competitor, Harry Kane.
Haaland has scored 11 goals in the Champions League, including five against RB Leipzig in one encounter last month.
In last week’s 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich, he scored again to put Pep Guardiola’s men in the driver’s seat in their UCL quarter final matchup.
City and Haaland will seek to complete the job in tonight’s second leg tie at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
With such an advantage over their German opponents, the English Premier League champions will be confident of securing progression to the next phase of the competition.
However, manager Guardiola will not take any chances and actually rested Haaland at the weekend in preparation of the fixture.
The Spaniard previously managed the club to success in the Bundesliga though since he left Barcelona, he has yet to secure a Champions League title.
Still in the running for the EPL title and the FA Cup, City are looking to make it a treble of trophies this season and Haaland’s goals will be crucial to getting them there.
