Manchester United face Manchester City on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford in the first Manchester derby of the season. Despite a terrible start to the season, the home side can move to within three points of their Manchester rivals with a win here so there is plenty of incentive there for Erik Ten Hag’s side. For Manchester City, a win is needed to keep pace with Spurs, who beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Friday night. The match will kick off at 15:30 UK time and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
Manchester United vs Manchester City H2H: The story so far
Contents
Manchester United have been the the dominant force in Manchester for large periods of time throughout history, however, Manchester City have always fared quite well against the Reds even when there was a large gulf between the two clubs. Overall, Man Utd are on top in the head to head, however, not by as big a margin as you might expect.
- Manchester United wins: 78
- Draws: 53
- Manchester City wins: 59
Unsurprisingly, Manchester City’s record against Manchester United has improved since 2008 when the club was bought by Sheikh Mansour. City go into most derbies as favourites these days and they have lost just one of the previous five Manchester derbies.
History in the making
If Manchester United can upset the odds and beat Manchester City in Sunday then it will be the first time they have won back-to-back home derbies in over a decade. The last time they managed to beat their city rivals in two consecutive Old Trafford derbies was in 2010/11 when Wayne Rooney scored an overhead kick to win the match.

Manchester City 2-1 Manchester United
Back in May, Manchester City defeated Manchester United in the first-ever Manchester derby FA Cup final. Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring after just 12 seconds with a sensational volley from distance before Bruno Fernandes equalised for United just before half time. Gundogan got the all-important second goal shortly after half time to give City the victory and the second part of their treble.
Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City
Erik Ten Hag secured his first win over Manchester City as United boss in January 2023. United came into the match in good form and came from behind to defeat Pep Guardiola’s men. Jack Grealish opened the scoring for the Blues but a controversial equaliser from Bruno Fernandes brought the Reds back into it in the 78th minute and just four minutes later, Marcus Rashford completed the comeback after some excellent wing play from Alejandro Garnacho.
Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United
While on paper this may look like an exciting football match that ebbed and flowed, the reality was more like a Manchester City massacre. The Blues took a 4-0 lead into half time after dismantling United in the opening 45 minutes before Antony made it 4-1 shortly after the break with a curling effort from outside the area. City then made it 6-1 before two late United goals made the scoreline look far more respectable than it should have been.
Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United
Another Etihad derby and another Manchester City demolition job on their great rivals. Kevin de Bruyne got things underway with a goal after just five minutes before Jadon Sancho levelled things up against the run of play midway through the first half. Sancho’s goal seemed to anger City who then went into fifth gear to make sure of the win. De Bruyne made it 2-1 before a Mahrez double in the second half completed the rout.
Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City
In November 2021, the writing was on the wall for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Man Utd boss so the visit of Manchester City was the last thing he wanted. City ended up winning 2-0 without getting out of second gear courtesy of an Eric Bailly own goal and a late first half strike from Bernardo Silva. A month later, Solskjaer was fired as Manchester United boss.
Iconic moment
Michael Owen wins it in Fergie time
The Manchester derby of September 2009 is widely considered as the best Manchester derby of all time and rightly so. The match swung one way to the next with City pegging United back three times before Michael Owen eventually won the match with the last kick of the game in the 96th minute.

Final prediction
The recent head-to-head record suggests that Manchester City should be expected to win this match and given how poorly Manchester United have been playing this season, it would be foolish to bet against the Blues here. If they can take an early lead, which they have done frequently in this fixture in recent years, then it could turn ugly at Old Trafford. We’re going for Manchester United 1-3 Manchester City.
