Global superstar Kylian Mbappe has informed current club Paris St. Germain that he will not be taking up the option to extend his contract with the Parisians by one year, according to reports, in a move that could trigger an exit for the 24-year-old this summer.
Mbappe’s current deal with PSG is due to expire in 2024, which means that he would be free to discuss terms with suitors as early as January next year about a possible free transfer for one of the game’s most valuable commodities.
PSG signed Mbappe from fellow French club Monaco for a fee believed to be in the region of £160m in 2018 and having fended off plenty of interest in the attacker from Spanish giants Real Madrid since, they could now be set to lose their prized asset for nothing if the latest news holds weight.
Mbappe drops major bombshell
According to the latest reports, Kylian Mbappe informed PSG of his intentions when he submitted a formal letter detailing his wishes earlier this week.
The news comes hot on the heels of Lionel Messi’s decision to leave Paris for a new challenge with Inter Miami in the MLS, while Brazilian star Neymar is also thought to be angling for an exit from the French champions and the 31-year-old is believed to be on the radar of some cash-rich clubs in Saudi Arabia.
If the worst-case scenario plays out, PSG could be stripped of their three biggest names in one fell swoop with poster-boys Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe all potentially at new clubs before the start of the next club season in August.
With Mbappe’s future in the French capital in serious doubt, PSG have to weigh up whether to sell their star turn now to avoid losing him for zilch in 12 months’ time. Several reputable sources have already indicated that their preference would be to sell the rapid attacker for a sizable fee this summer.
Some observers have suggested that this is more contract brinkmanship from Mbappe and his camp in a bid to bump up the value of a new contract with PSG. Mbappe left interested parties guessing right up until he penned a fresh deal with Paris St. Germain in 2022, when a money-spinning switch to Real Madrid had looked certain.

Eyes lighting up in Madrid?
The news concerning Mbappe’s contract with PSG is guaranteed to have alerted long-time admirers Real Madrid, who are in the market for a star centre-forward following the departure of iconic veteran Karim Benzema to Saudi Arabian outfit, Al-Ittihad.
Los Blancos have already sanctioned a gigantic deal to bring Jude Bellingham to Spain from Borussia Dortmund, though Real have enough cash in their coffers to put together a similar swoop for their long-term target Kylian Mbappe.
Premier League sides Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City have also been muted as possible destinations for Mbappe, though the young Frenchman is believed to have his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.
