Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed the reasons behind his club’s recent struggles.
The Blues have lost all three of their matches since the return of Lampard to the dugout, against Wolves and Brighton in the Premier League and Real Madrid in the Champions League.
They have conceded five goals from those three games, scoring just once, with another tough test against Real Madrid up next.
The most recent loss against Brighton has simply emphasised how poor Chelsea have been, with the Seagulls dominating proceedings at Stamford Bridge on Saturday with 26 attempts on goal, compared to just eight from the home side.
Chelsea boss keen to build confidence
The Blues currently sit 11th in the Premier League table, in what has been a miserable campaign for the west London outfit.
The club have won just 10 of their 31 league matches, drawing nine of those and losing the other 12, with finding the back of the net a major problem in recent times.
They are now into their third manager of the season, with Lampard taking over from the sacked Graham Potter, who had taken over the sacked Thomas Tuchel.
While there is nothing left to play for domestically, Chelsea remain in the Champions League, but face an uphill battle against Spanish giants Madrid on Tuesday.
The Blues host Los Blancos at Stamford Bridge in their Champions League quarter-final second leg, with the Spanish side having won the first leg 2-0 in Madrid last week.
But the Chelsea manager believes he knows which areas he needs to fix in order to have his players reach their full potential.
“The work to build confidence is what we need, because there is talent in that squad,” Lampard told the official Chelsea website.
“Everything is there for the players in terms of how we can push and drive them, individual and collective work, we’re here to do that.”
Busy period for Chelsea
It’s been a very busy return to the Chelsea dugout for Lampard, with the Blues playing three matches in the space of a week.
As mentioned, they lost all three of those, but have no time to ponder such defeats given their ongoing busy schedule. After the clash with Madrid, the Blues host Brentford and travel to Arsenal in the league in quick succession.
Given that busy schedule, Lampard noted that he has barely had any time to help improve his squad on the training ground.
“Every conversation is different,” added Lampard. “Every player needs confidence but there are different ways to get there. When you can’t train, and I’m in here for this period, it’s important you do everything you can that is not physical to try and help.
“There have been more conversations and meetings than training pitch stuff. We’re talking individually to the players. When we get a chance to work, the team needs some physical work.
“That’s important because at this level you have to be on the limit, and I’m not sure we’re on the limit now. That can only be a capacity thing with the players for whatever reason. It doesn’t matter how we got here, it needs to be addressed now.”
