What are the Basics of Fantasy Premier League?
In FPL, you are a manager and you have to create your team. This virtual team will face other players (friend groups or random players) in various games and tournaments. There are a couple of options you have after you create your team, which are called chips, like:
- Wildcard
- Free Hit
- Triple Captain
- Bench Boost
What is Double Gameweek?
Double Gameweek is when a certain club has two games within one Gameweek, while other clubs have only one fixture. This happens because a Premier League team may also play in another tournament, like the FA Cup, in the same Gameweek and maybe because last week they didn’t play at all.
There could be a lot of rescheduling reasons, but when teams play twice, this is an opportunity to earn twice the points you would usually earn. Although, you will need time to prepare, so you should check out the most recent schedule of the matches on the Premier League website.
Another version is the Blank Gameweek, where a team won’t play at all during that Gameweek. This usually follows or precedes such a Gameweek, so you should be able to plan your chips accordingly.
Double Gameweeks During the 2021/2022 Fantasy Premier League Season
The Premier League schedule for 2021/2022 is already up and you can plan for the Blank and Double Gameweeks. We also know when the four international breaks will be in the next season.
- International break 1 – between Gameweeks 3 and 4
- International break 2 – between Gameweeks 7 and 8
- International break 3 – between Gameweeks 11 and 12
- International break 4 – between Gameweeks 30 and 31
We will most likely see a Blank Gameweek in the quarter-final stage of the FA Cup, which will be around Gameweek 30. The semi-finals of the FA Cup will also most likely create a Blank Gameweek, although not as large as the quarter-finals. Considering the Champions League and Europa League fixture, there will most likely be clear midweeks in Gameweek 33 and Gameweek 36, but of course, we don’t know the full extent of the schedule, yet, so we can only guess.
Strategy & Tips
Below, you can read more about certain chips and the benefits of using them within a week in which there are two matches per team.
Tripple Captain and how to use it
A popular strategy is to use the Tripple Captain chip because not only will the score of a certain captain be tripled, but they get to play two times within a single Gameweek. People mostly target players in the top 6 who have favorable games that Gameweek.
The Tripple Captain chip can only be used once per season, so you should plan and see which double Gameweek will be best to use the chip on if there is more than one.
Bench Boost
You can use the Bench Boost fixture only once per season, so you will have to plan accordingly for when will be the best time to use it.
Using Bench Boost is also popular because if you used it within a regular Gameweek, you would get points worth extra four players, but if you used it on a double Gameweek, you would get points worth extra eight players.
Free Hit for Double Gameweek
Free Hit can only be used once per season and it allows you to make unlimited transfers for a whole Gameweek. Using the Free Hit chip within a double Gameweek isn’t as popular as the two chips we described above, but some managers still choose it.
If you save the Free Hit for this specific time, then you can potentially have a whole team of players who will play twice during the Gameweek. Of course, most managers are adamant that the Bench Boost or Tripple Captain on a double Gameweek is better.
Using the wildcard
A wild card can only be used twice during a season, and one chip is available for the first half of the season, while the second chip is available for the second half of the season. The Wildcard chip allows you to make as many free transfers as you like during a Gameweek.
Of course, you will have to have a strategy in place for the best time to use the two Wildcard options, and some people think it’s good to use one of the chips within a double Gameweek.
Frequently Asked Questions About FPL & Double Gameweeks

No, they aren’t. Scheduled can be postponed for different reasons, and the Premier League isn’t the only schedule you should know. The Champions League, FA Cup, Europa League schedules are also important.
Where can I see which Gameweeks will be double next season?
There are plenty of sites and blogs dedicated to Fantasy Premier League, so you can maybe check out one of them and see exactly when the next Double Gameweek will be.
