Fantasy football wildcards explained

Are you interested in football management specifically, or are you just a fan who likes playing fantasy football? Why not try out Fantasy Premier League. The English Premier League is the most popular football league for fans all around the world, and many people enjoy playing manager and choosing their teams.

In FPL, you can create your team and play against different groups of friends each Gameweek. You can even enter a specific game if you have the correct league code. In the interest of fair play, each person can have a maximum of one team they can manage, and you can make changes to the team with the so-called Free Hit and Wildcard chips.

In this article, we will discuss the specifics of a fantasy football wildcard and give you some tips if you are planning to use a wildcard chip. Keep in mind that we will only focus on Fantasy Premier League football.

What is a Premier League Fantasy Football Wildcard?

Managers in FPL get to have one free transfer per Gameweek and if you bank your free hit for the week, you can use two of the following Gameweek. Wildcards are only one of the so-called “chips” available. Other chips include “Bench Boost,” “Tripple Captain,” and “Free Hit,” but compared to the Wildcard, these three chips can only be used once per season.

In the Fantasy Premier League, you have two Wildcards to use for each season. So, it’s like you have one fantasy football wildcard available for each half of the football season.

  • Wildcard No. 1 is available up until December 28th @ 3:30 PM
  • Wildcard No. 2 is available after December 28th up until the season ends

The Wildcard allows you to make unlimited transfers for free up until the end of the Gameweek. The normal transfer policy in Fantasy Premier League is to have only one free transfer available each week. Every other transfer will deduct four points from your score.

It would be tragic for your score if you wanted to transfer several players at one time and that’s where the fantasy football wildcard comes in. With it, you have one Gameweek to make all the transfers you like, for free. Remember that you don’t have to make all your transfers at the time you activate the Wildcard.

For example, you can make one or two transfers when you activate the fantasy football wildcard, but you can make the rest further into the Gameweek, but not after the wildcard deadline. Another fact you should be aware of is that you can’t cancel the fantasy football wildcard once you activate it, so we advise you to give it some thought before you use this FPL feature.

How to Activate the Fantasy Football Wildcard on the Platform?

Activating the fantasy football wildcard is simple for the website and FPL mobile app. Follow these steps to activate it:

  1. Head to the “Transfers” page on the website or application.
  2. Make the transfers you want, whether it’s all at once or only several to start with.
  3. Click on the “Play Wildcard” button, which is next to the “Reset” button and above your bank.
  4. If you change your mind up until this point you can still cancel the fantasy football wildcard.
  5. To continue forward and activate it, you have to click on the “Make Transfers” button.

If you are using the movie application to activate your fantasy football wildcard, you have to click on the “Transfers” button and mark the players you would like to remove from your squad, and click on the “Next” button. The following step is to choose the players you want to replace them with and again click on the “Next” button.

In the third window, you will see the “Play Wildcard” option next to the “free hit” option. Once you mark it and click on “Confirm” your wildcard will be activated and you can’t cancel it anymore.

Fantasy Football Wildcard Tips & Tricks

Another fact you should know about Wildcards is that whenever you use one, you will have to keep the transfers within your current budget. While you do get to make the transfers for free, you don’t get an unlimited budget to go with it.

Also remember that when wildcards are activated, any free transfers you might have saved up will be lost and you will be back to the one free hit next Gameweek.

If you made any transfers before the end of the Gamweek, but you decide to activate your fantasy football wildcard before the deadline, all the free transfers you made up until the activation of the Wildcard that Gameweek will also be free.
