The Royal Ascot Gold Cup is the pinnacle of stayers’ contests in Flat racing, featuring the most excellent horses over a course of 2m 4f. The 2023 event, scheduled for 4.20pm on Thursday, boasts a 14-horse field.

Unfortunately, Kyprios, the winner from last year, won’t feature due to an infection. Notable entrants include the Doncaster Cup winner, Coltrane, and 2022 St Leger victor, Eldar Eldarov.

Aidan O’Brien, a record eight-time winner of the Gold Cup, will be aiming for a ninth victory with his two entries, four-year-old filly Emily Dickinson and seven-year-old Broome.

Winner: Coltrane @ 7/2

Next Best: Emily Dickinson @ 11/2

Coltrane Expected to Shine

Trained by Andrew Balding, Coltrane is expected to put in an impressive performance, having spent the past 12 months consistently excelling in the stayers’ division. His winning performance at the Ascot Stakes over the same course and distance in 2022 was a demonstration of his capabilities, and his victory in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup further solidified his position.

Although the ground conditions last October in the British Champions Long Distance Cup were in the favor of Trueshan, Coltrane still put on a strong performance. Based on his recent impressive performance in a Group 3 contest at the Berkshire course, it’s evident that Coltrane sets the standard in this race and is the horse to beat.

Emily Dickinson Could Surpass Expectations

Trainer O’Brien’s entries in the Gold Cup can’t be ignored due to his impressive track record. Among his two contenders, Emily Dickinson appears to be the stronger prospect. The four-year-old filly is exquisitely bred – the progeny of Dubawi and Chiquita – and has shown consistently that she is a top-level competitor.

In her three-year-old season, Emily Dickinson secured Group success at the Curragh and also ran admirably in the St Leger and Irish Oaks. O’Brien’s decision to run her over the marathon 2m 4f trip indicates his confidence in her abilities. The weight allowance for fillies gives Emily Dickinson a slight advantage, and the presence of jockey Ryan Moore, who steered Kyprios to victory last year and is in excellent form, adds to her appeal.

As always, the Royal Ascot Gold Cup is expected to be a thrilling contest, with these horses among the favorites but many others capable of an upset. Be sure to keep an eye on the latest odds and updates leading up to the race.
