World Cup 2022: Royal present for the ‘royal’ win against Argentina

Saudi Arabia continues to celebrate their players after their impressive win against Argentina. The players have become national heroes after managing to turn around a 1-0 deficit after halftime and beat one of the favorites to win the title.

That faithful day has already been engraved in Saudi Arabia’s sports history as a national holiday, but the royal prince Mohammed bin Salman has decided to reward every player on the team with one of the most expensive cars in the world, an RM6 million Rolls Royce Phantom.

This is the first time that the whole team got such an expensive gift, but it’s not the first time a Rolls Royce was given to someone on the football team. Back in 1994, during the World Cup in the United States, one of the greatest Saudi Arabia players ever, Saeed Al-Owairan scored against Belgium a goal that is considered one of the greatest to be performed at the World Cup. As a reward, he got a Rolls Royce.

But, the win against Argentina also has one additional merit, and it’s about the future of football in Saudi Arabia, one of the richest countries in the world. The Saudi Royal family wants to organize the World Cup in 2030, and some believe that they have a good chance.

However, there is a problem that the Saudi Royal family didn’t count on, and that is the rule that FIFA introduced in 2017 which means that every continent will have the opportunity to organize a World Cup in a respective order which means that after Qatar this year, Asia can’t get another chance already in 2030. For now, there are three bids for the tournament, a joint bid from Argentina and Uruguay representing South America, and two bids from Europe. One is another joint venture by the Iberian Peninsula neighbors Spain and Portugal, and the last one is from England.

What’s next for Saudi Arabia?

While they are celebrating their win against Argentina, the Saudi Arabia team needs to put the focus back on the playing field. After only one round of action, they sit at the top of the group in front of Poland and Mexico who drew their opening game, with Argentina getting the last spot. There are two more rounds to be played, and the Saudis will need another miracle or two to get them into the last 16.

Their next opponent is Poland who won’t make the same mistake as Argentina and underestimate the Arab team. Even before the World Cup started, Saudi Arabia lost to the last World Cup finalists Croatia by a single-goal difference in a friendly match that proved how comfortable they feel playing in their geographic region.

Saudi Arabia will play their final game against Mexico. However, their focus is on Poland who will count on Robert Lewandowski to finally score his first World Cup goal after previously missing the target in the last four games, dating to the tournament four years ago.
Argentina will be grateful, on the other hand, that Poland and Mexico have only one point, so they still have a good chance of progressing to the round of 16.
