Portugal vs Switzerland: Preview

In a last-16 tie that will see one nation go through to the quarter-finals and one go home, a nervy affair is expected. The other last-16 ties at this year’s World Cup have all gone as expected with the favourites winning each tie, however, that could all change here.

Switzerland will be bouncing ahead of the fixture after coming through on the winning side of a five-goal thriller with Serbia while Portugal lost their final group game to South Korea. That shouldn’t fool Switzerland, though, as a number of key players including Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix expected to return to the starting eleven.

Ahead of the game, Portugal boss Fernando Santos has thrown the selection of Cristiano Ronaldo up in the air. The 68-year-old has openly admitted that he isn’t happy with how Ronaldo reacted to being substituted against South Korea and has refused to confirm if the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will start and/or captain his side against Switzerland.
