Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reported to have met with the representatives of Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat with a view to signing for the Merseyside club.

Amrabat is currently playing for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where his side have done surprisingly well. The midfielder has contributed greatly to the North African outfit’s positive run at the tournament which has seen them book their place at a World Cup quarter-final for the first time ever.

Amrabat’s World Cup Performances

The midfielder has played every minute for the Atlas Lions at the finals so far, including his country’s penalty shootout victory over Spain. The defensive midfielder has been one of the standout players in Qatar, attracting lots of interest from a variety of clubs.

The Moroccan currently plays with Italian Serie A side Fiorentina, where he has made 20 appearances in competitive fixtures so far this season. The player is said to be hungry for Champions League football however, and would be willing to leave the side to achieve this aim.  The Dutch-born midfielder signed for the Italian side in 2020 and his contract expires in June 2024 so Liverpool may sense an opportunity to get the player in for a reasonable sum.

The French media outlet, ‘Foot Mercato,’ has reported that Jurgen Klopp met with the player’s representatives as Liverpool look to sign the 26-year old breakout star in the hope of bolstering squad and curing their midfield woes.

Amrabat ‘Top 3’ at World Cup

According to his agent, Mohammed Sinouh, the player has lots of offers on the table thanks to his performances at the World Cup. Morocco topped group F in the opening stages of the tournament in Qatar, which also included heavy-hitters Belgium and Croatia. The team then went on to defeat Spain in penalties in the final round of 16.

Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Curtis Jones have all struggled with form and injuries so far season for Liverpool, while a number of the Reds’ midfielders are also out of contract next year. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner may all see their time with the club come to an end in June as Klopp looks to rebuild his midfield options.

Liverpool missed out to Real Madrid when looking to sign French star Aurelien Tchouameni in the summer and they are still in the market for a midfielder. The club have also been heavily linked with young England star Jude Bellingham, another player who has starred in Qatar this winter.

Amrabat’s early career

Amrabat began his career with FC Utrecht before moving to Feyenoord Rotterdam for the 2017/2018 season. A move to Belgium followed in 2018, when the midfielder transferred to Club Brugge before being shipped out to Hellas Verona on loan.

He was signed permanently by the Italian club in January 2020 for a fee of €3.65 million. Later in that same window, Verona sold Amrabat for a big profit to Fiorentina for a price of €19.50 million.

At current, the player valuation website Transfermarkt.com estimates that Amrabat is worth €10 million, although we can expect a much higher sale fee if Liverpool decide to purchase the Moroccan.
