World Cup 2022: Harry Kane reveals details of conversation with ‘biggest idol’ David Beckham

England captain Harry Kane has revealed the details of his conversation with Three Lions legend David Beckham in Qatar.

In the country due to his ambassador role for the 2022 World Cup, Beckham was invited to visit the England camp by manager Gareth Southgate. He posed for photographs with the boss and the players, and had a detailed chat with England skipper Kane.

Kane: Beckham was my biggest idol growing up

Beckham and Kane certainly have a lot in common, having attended the same secondary school and having played for the same Sunday League club.

Moreover, both have worn the captain’s armband for their country, with Kane currently doing so. The striker has revealed that he looked up to the former midfielder growing up, adding that Beckham was one of England’s best-ever captains.

The ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid man made 115 appearances for England, with only Peter Shilton and Wayne Rooney above him in the all-time list.

“Becks went to my secondary school, Chingford Foundation,” said Kane, as reported by talkSPORT. “We both played for Ridgeway Rovers, our Sunday League team. He was my biggest idol when I was growing up.

“He was here the other day. We had a good chat. He was one of the best captains we ever had.”

Beckham ‘loves watching’ England play

Kane also explained that he asked about Beckham’s experiences on the big stage, as well as how he views the current Three Lions team.

England are into the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup after clinching top spot in Group B, before defeating Senegal 3-0 in the round of 16.

They meet defending champions France in the quarter-finals on Saturday, with Kane heading into the match having netted his first goal of the tournament against Senegal.

Speaking further on his discussion with Beckham, Kane said: “I didn’t just ask questions about games or how he felt, it was more just getting to know his experiences, how he feels about our team, what he sees in our team.

“We had a chat about loads of things. He’s really excited for the national side. He loves watching us play.

“It’s great to have support from ex-players. They know how much it means to represent your country. They’re all part of the team.”

Kane confident ahead of France tie

Kane currently sits on one goal for the tournament, with his teammates Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford both on three.

But it is France star Kylian Mbappe who leads the way with five. Les Bleus secured their spot in the last eight with a 3-1 victory over Poland, a match in which Mbappe found the back of the net twice.

Kane is, however, feeling confident ahead of the World Cup quarter-final showdown, saying: “We’re facing a really good team on Saturday. But the boys are feeling really good and we want to carry that on.”

“To win a World Cup, you’re going to have to play the best sides and France are definitely one of those. We have belief. We know what to expect, we are not getting carried away but we know it’s a chance to play in a World Cup semi-final.”
