Ghana manager Otto Addo has resigned from his role with the national side, citing family reasons behind his decision.
Speaking after Ghana were eliminated from the 2022 World Cup, Addo said his family sees their future in Germany. He is currently working as a talent coach at Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund.
Addo was handed the Ghana managerial job after the country sacked Milovan Rajevac in February of this year. He initially took over as interim boss, and was then handed a deal until the end of December.
Ghana boss has ‘future in Germany’

The African nation made it to Qatar after topping their group in Confederation of African Football (CAF) second-round qualification, before defeating Nigeria on away goals in the third round.
Ghana then finished bottom of Group H at the World Cup, winning once and losing twice in their three matches.
They kicked the tournament off by losing 3-2 against Portugal, before defeating South Korea by the same scoreline. The African side then lost 2-0 to Uruguay in the final group game.
Addo has now left his role in the dugout, but says that the decision was always going to be made, regardless of how far the nation went in Qatar.
It was their fourth appearance at the World Cup, having previously played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions. They headed into the competition as the lowest-ranked team in world football, sitting 61st.
“I always said if we qualified for the World Cup I’d resign afterwards, even if we were world champions,” said Addo, as reported by BBC Sport. “My family see our future in Germany.”
Addo bemoans ‘ugly’ football
Addo was born in Germany to Ghanaian parents, and made 15 appearances for the Ghana national team between 1999 and 2006.
The ex-Borussia Dortmund and Hamburg player represented his nation at the 2006 World Cup, with Ghana reaching the Round of 16 before being knocked out by Brazil. They beat both the Czech Republic and the USA in the group stages, losing out to eventual champions Italy.
But they could not achieve the same feat this time around, with Addo doing his best to take the positives from the tournament.
Speaking after the loss to Uruguay on Friday, Addo said: “Football is beautiful, sometimes it is ugly. It is ugly for us today. We have to learn and I’m very sure we will learn from this in the future.”
Which managers have joined Ghana boss Addo in leaving?
Ghana manager Addo isn’t the only boss to leave following his side’s exit from the World Cup, with Belgium’s Roberto Martinez leaving his post after the Red Devils’ miserable campaign.
Belgium finished third in Group F in Qatar, winning once, drawing once and losing once. They got off to winning ways by defeating Canada 1-0, but followed this with a 2-0 loss to Morocco and a goalless draw with Croatia.
The future of Canada boss John Herdman meanwhile is also in the headlines, with the manager facing questions over his position in the dugout.
And the position of England boss Gareth Southgate also remains uncertain, and could be dependent on how far the Three Lions can go in Qatar.
