World Cup 2022: France Star Signs for Chelsea

France forward Christopher Nkunku has been reported to have signed a deal with English Premier League side, Chelsea, which would see him join the London club next summer.

Nkunku had intended to line out at the World Cup for France as one of the nation’s main attacking threats but unfortunately for the forward, he missed out on all of Les Bleus’ games due to injury.

Currently at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, Nkunku has been linked with a move to Chelsea on and off for a long time. Now it appears that the striker will finally make that move next summer after Chelsea, under Graham Potter’s management, have secured his signature.

According to football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the transfer deal is now “signed and sealed,” and both parties are set to complete the move for the 2023 Summer transfer window.

“Christopher Nkunku deal, signed and sealed — here we go now confirmed,” the Italian reporter tweeted to his followers.

“All documents and contracts are also signed, it’s 100% close CFC French striker can be considered new Chelsea player, starting from July 2023,” he reported “It’s all signed/sealed with RB Leipzig and player side.”

The transfer fee involved in the deal has yet to be revealed, if it ever will, but it is likely to be an extremely large sum given how highly rated the 25-year old  forward is right now. Also factored into the deal is the fact that Nkunku’s contract with Leipzig is not due to end until June 2026, allowing the German side to charge a high sum for the services of their player.

Recent reports have indicated a transfer fee around 70 million euros for Nkunku. Currently estimated to be worth around 80 million euros by transfermarkt.com, Leipzig are due to make a big profit on the forward regardless, after they signed him from Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 for a now seemingly meagre 13 million euros.

Nkunku Superb for RB Leipzig

In 159 senior appearances for the German Bundesliga side, Nkunku has netted 64 goals and assisted 51 times. Last year, he helped his side secure the German Cup and was also named Bundesliga Player of the Season.

RB Leipzig have already secured Nkunku’s replacement in the form of Benjamin Sesko, who they signed from partner club RB Salzburg in Austria. Sesko is due to join the side in the summer ahead of next season.

Nkunku has secured the move to Chelsea with some displays of fine form over the last couple of seasons. This season, the striker has netted 17 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions, including  the three goals he scored in Leipzig’s Champions league group.

Nkunku’s teammate, Croatian center-back Josko Gvardiol, has also been linked with a move to Chelsea although the young defender appears to be in no rush to move on given recent reports.

Had Nkunku stayed fit, he would possibly be lining out for France in their world Cup final against Argentina on Sunday evening. The reigning champions are attempting to become just the third country to defend their World Cup title after they also won the tournament in Russia in 2018.
