World Cup 2022: England vs Iran Player Ratings

England

Gareth Southgate opted for a 4-3-3 formation against Iran.

Jordan Pickford – 6

Jordan Pickford was a spectator for most of the match. However, he could have done slightly better to prevent the two goals by the opposition.

Kieran Trippier – 7.5

Trippier was a frequent threat in the final third with his offensive runs. However, Trippier was guilty of giving up possession on a couple of occasions. The quality of offensive contributions was also a tad poor compared to what Recce James would have offered.

John Stones – 7

Stones was quite understated but he had a solid performance. Stones will be disappointed with his handling of Mehdi Taremi on the two occasions in which the forward was able to get a goal.

Harry Maguire – 7

Harry Maguire had a solid outing in the central defence. An injury meant that the United centre back was not at his 100% in the game. Maguire provided an assist from a set piece situation.

Luke Shaw – 7.5

Luke Shaw was able to provide a solid defence while being quite useful in the final third. The Manchester United left-back provided an assist for Bellingham’s goal.

Declan Rice – 7.5

The West Ham midfielder came up with a solid performance without too many highlights. He was able to tidy up many of the situations for the Three Lions.

Jude Bellingham – 9

England

Despite making his first start at a major tournament, Bellingham came up with a mature performance. He was able to boss the midfield and provided little encouragement for the Iranian forwards.

Mason Mount – 8

Mason Mount was not on the scoresheet but he provided England with immense energy in the midfield. Mount barely put a foot wrong in the game and he finished with 89% pass accuracy.

Bukayo Saka – 9

Bukayo Saka was the star of the show as England had a brilliant start to the World Cup campaign. The winger came up with a brace – albeit aided by a deflection for his second goal – while also pushing forward relentlessly with his runs.

Raheem Sterling – 8

Raheem Sterling is clearly getting back to his best and the Chelsea winger scored his first international goal since March. Sterling also had a pass accuracy of more than 85%. The performance will be a huge boost for Sterling’s confidence levels.

Harry Kane – 7

Harry Kane was not on the scoresheet and this does not happen often when England score six. Yet, the Tottenham forward was quite happy to be off the limelight in this match. He did not have a shot at goal in the game even if he contributed through two assists.
