Why are top clubs chasing Lille striker Jonathan David?

Lille striker Jonathan David is causing quite the stir this season. He has been in sensational form for the Ligue 1 outfit.

The Canada international has 16 goals in all competitions. A dozen of those have come in the league, with three arriving in the Champions League. His other strike this season came in the Coupe de France.

Such form has resulted in many clubs standing up and taking notice. He’s only 22, but is already mixing it with the very best. Only Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder has more Ligue 1 goals this season.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, a handful of top clubs want to sign the forward this summer. Inter see him as a potential Lautaro Martinez replacement. The same can be said for Borussia Dortmund and Erling Haaland.

And in England, both Arsenal and Newcastle have set their sights on improving their frontline with David.

Is the Lille striker Arsenal bound?

It’s no secret that Arsenal are in desperate need of a striker. The Gunners let Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leave for Barcelona in January. And fellow forward Alexandre Lacazette could also soon be on the move. The same can be said for young striker Eddie Nketiah.

David and Arsenal could undoubtedly be a match made in heaven. The Canadian is very quick, and can operate as a centre forward or as a second striker. His interplay, however, could be what tempts Arsenal the most. His sharp and intelligent passing would be perfect for Mikel Arteta’s system. He can also make intelligent runs between defenders.

Arteta will undoubtedly be tuning in closely to the upcoming Champions League meeting between Lille and Chelsea. David has found the net in his last three matches in the competition. The Blues will certainly provide a sterner test for the striker. The eyes of the world will be watching, providing David with the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents.

The striker undoubtedly has what it takes to upset the big guns. He netted 13 goals last season as Lille shocked PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

Newcastle also keeping tabs on David

Newcastle are also keeping a watchful eye on David. The Magpies did just recently strengthen up top with Burnley striker Chris Wood. But many supporters believe this is just a short-term fix to help the club avoid relegation.

If relegation is avoided, then a young, exciting striker will be what Eddie Howe wants. And David fits the bill, with the club in desperate need of a goalscorer. Leading striker Callum Wilson has, of course, been very unfortunate with injuries. But even when fit, Wilson would love a strike partner to help share the burden.

The funds are clearly there at St James’ Park, so finances wouldn’t be an issue. After so many years of hurt, supporters would welcome as many marquee signings as possible. So far, these have largely involved strengthening at the back, a real problem area for the side.

That looks to have been resolved, so an attacking figure now must be the priority. Step forward Jonathan David.
