Why are Liverpool chasing Fulham star Fabio Carvalho?

Fabio Carvalho is reportedly close to joining Premier League giants Liverpool. The youngster is currently starring for Championship club Fulham.

The Reds are closing in on a Deadline Day move. According to Fabrizio Romano, talks are now entering their final stages. But the London outfit want the player to stay on loan until the end of the season.

Why are Liverpool eyeing Fabio Carvalho?

Carvalho has been a key part of Fulham’s promotion push. He has 18 appearances in the league this season. A toe injury and Covid have, however, kept him out of action at times. But he has seemingly put those worries behind him, scoring three goals and creating another three in his last four matches.

It’s a similar run to his electric start to the campaign. The 19-year-old scored three times and assisted another in his first four matches. Carvalho now boasts seven goals and four assists in the league this season.

The attacker has, in the past, found himself playing in wide positions. But this season he has cemented his status as one of the most exciting number tens out there. But he certainly isn’t a typical number ten. His statistics typify exactly what kind of player he is; a goalscorer first, and a creator second. It is usually the other way around. Links have already been drawn to former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho.

But he is much more than just goals and assists. Fulham fans are all too familiar with the teenager’s hunger and ingenuity. He’s a threat both on and off the ball. Real Madrid have reportedly been watching his progression over the years. And Porto more recently were chasing him as a replacement for Luis Diaz, who has incidentally joined the Reds this month.

Where would he fit in at Liverpool?

First and foremost, he would be a player for the future. By no means are the current Liverpool squad finished in their quest for more glory. But it’s clear that the club are already planning for life after their current stars. The likes of Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Caoimhin Kelleher are just a few examples of this. Former Fulham youngster Harvey Elliott is another.

When it comes to tactics, Carvalho will need to slightly adjust to life at Liverpool. But that is the case for every new recruit, such are the demands brought about by Klopp.

Carvalho is familiar with a 4-2-3-1 formation at Fulham. Not only will he find it different to Liverpool’s 4-3-3, but he will also be expected to press a lot more than usual. The 19-year-old may also need to improve his physicality if he aims to succeed at a higher level.

That said, he has already played in the Premier League. He found the net against Southampton during Fulham’s 2020/21 top-flight campaign.

And in positive news for the Reds, Carvalho should fit in perfectly with the team’s attacking system. He has constantly linked up with his fellow forwards at Fulham this season. And he is more than used to having the majority of possession throughout matches, such has been the club’s dominance in the Championship in recent months.
