Who is the Newcastle United captain

While normally a fairly simple question to answer, the Newcastle United captain isn’t quite as simple to answer from club captain, to team captain, to the leadership group. There’s a lot going on at Newcastle when it comes to who’s “in charge” on the pitch.

Often regarded as a similar situation to that of Maguire and Fernandes at Manchester United. For Newcastle, it’s not as simple as being stuck with the wrong person wearing the armband. And, frankly, if that is the case, Newcastle and Eddie Howe have handled the situation a lot better than they have in Manchester.

Who is Newcastle United’s Club Captain

Jamaal Lascelles will remain the captain for the 2023/24 season at Newcastle. While he only made five appearances last season, Howe has been quick to defend Jamal and his status as captain. Speaking prior to the side’s opening game against Aston Villa, alongside Jamal, Howe was full of praise for his captain.

I just want to say, with Jamaal in the room, he has been an unbelievable captain for us. And captaincy, for me, doesn’t just exist on the pitch, it has to exist off the pitch . The two things are so intrinsically linked. So a lot of our success last season didn’t just come down to the team; it was a group of players giving everything, on and off the pitch”

Jamaal Lascelles has been the captain since 2016, when former captain Fabricio Coloccini departed the club. Jamal was given the captain’s armband after the club suffered a poor performance, and Jamal was quick to face the cameras. The moment stuck with then-manager Rafa Benitez, who made Jamal his captain at the latest opportunity.

As Jamaal Lascelles enters the final year of his current Newcastle United contract, it will be interesting to see how things are handled in the future. If Jamal is to leave, we’d suspect Trippier takes on both roles, with another player taking on the vice-captain role.

Who is the Newcastle United Team Captain

Despite Jamaal Lascelles being captain, it’s Kieran Trippier who you’ll see wearing the armband most weeks. With Jamal not a regular starter under Howe, Trippier, who was the first signing of the Howe era, has been one of the most critical players in the club since he joined.

However, when Jamal does get on the pitch, he is given the armband by Trippier. Jamal spoke about the partnership at the same press conference as Howe.

Me and Tripps (Kieran Trippier) are really good friends…”

Who is in the Newcastle United Leadership Group

The leadership group is probably the most unique aspect of the Newcastle captain situation. First mentioned by Trippier, it’s not been confirmed to feature a number of Newcastle’s most senior members. Obviously, Jamaal Lascelles and Kiaran Tripper are part of the group. Alongside them are veteran versatility man Matt Ritchie, striker Callum Wilson, and local boy Dan Burn.

The 23/24 season has even brought official acknowledgement of the Leadership Group, with players from it now doing a match-day interview in the Newcastle United program.

While it’s fair to say, that a lot of this has happened due to Howe likely not wanting to update the status quo by replacing his captain, who is still at the club. The Leadership Group is a great idea, especially as Howe wants to enforce a sense of togetherness from everyone at the club.
