Darwin Nunez has enjoyed a stunning season so far. The Benfica striker has 31 goals in all competitions.
Such form has caught the eye of many top European clubs. Both Arsenal and West Ham reportedly showed interest in January. But the Uruguayan was not allowed to leave his current club. That, however, looks set to change this summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Nunez will find a new club in the coming months. The agent says the 22-year-old will be available for around €80m.
Manchester United are another of the clubs interested. And he may just be the forward they need to kickstart their much-needed makeover.
Where would Darwin Nunez fit in at Man Utd?
Any decision the forward will make will, of course, factor in the man in the dugout. Man Utd are yet to appoint a permanent boss. Current interim Ralf Rangnick could take over on a permanent basis, but at this stage it seems unlikely.
Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is seemingly the number one name on the list. And his appointment could be an incentive for Nunez to make a switch to Old Trafford. The boss certainly likes his attacking football.
The attacker has been played out wide during his brief career, using his pace before cutting in from the left to either score or set up a chance.
But centre-forward is undoubtedly his strongest position. That is exactly where he would slot in at Man Utd. The club are desperate for additions in many different positions, and striker is certainly one of them.
United’s league rivals Liverpool know all about the young attacker. He netted against the Reds in the recent Champions League quarter-final first leg tie. He will once again be a huge threat when the clubs meet for the second leg this week.
Nunez is certainly a big game player. He also found the net against Bayern Munich in the group stages. That was after a brace against Barcelona.
He’s capable of leading the line, and has the strength and pace to trouble defenders on the ground and in the air.
Which Man Utd players will make way?
Cristiano Ronaldo has largely led the line for Man Utd this season. The Portugal international has once again performed on the big stage. He has saved his club countless times in all competitions.
But even Ronaldo has his limits, and his frustration has come to the fore at times in recent months. Fans may forgive the legendary forward if he left this summer in order to avoid playing in the Europa League Conference, which is a real possibility for United next season.
One player who looks certain to leave is Edinson Cavani. The ageing striker has been hampered by injuries this season, and his time in Manchester will certainly not be the most memorable of his glittering career.
It could, therefore, be one Uruguayan out and one Uruguayan in. Nunez is almost into double figures for appearances for his country, and looks set to be the man to take over from Cavani and Luis Suarez on the international stage.
