Team news: West Ham

West Ham were close to a winning start to the new season but they underestimated Bournemouth’s resolve and had to settle for a 1-1 draw instead. Bowen scored for the Hammers and he is high on confidence right now after also scoring the winner in June’s Conference League final.

West Ham are also enjoying dominance in this derby since they moved to their new home the London Stadium – (W4 D2 L2). That said their coach David Moyes has met Chelsea 46 times in his career (most of any rival team for Moyes) and his personal record against the Blues is unimpressive – (W7 D13 L26).

West Ham are likely to give full debuts to their latest new signings Alvarez and Ward-Prowse in midfield. The pair were brought in to provide much-needed cover now Declan Rice has left the club.

West Ham are enjoying a clean bill of health.

Areola – Coufal, Zouma, Aguerd, Emerson – Alvarez, Ward-Prowse – Bowen, Paqueta, Benrahma – Antonio

Team news: Chelsea

After a dreadful previous campaign and 2 sacked managers Chelsea seem to have pressed the reset button this summer. In only their second year as owner, the American Todd Boehly decided to open the treasury this summer and go all-out. He trusted the experienced Mauricio Pochettino to take charge and was also willing to spend tons of money on new players. Chelsea are still not done shopping it seems.

The biggest summer signing so far was Leipzig’s forward Christopher Nkunku, but unfortunately for the Frenchman, he won’t be playing for several months due to a freak injury.

The other important players set to miss the game are defenders James (injured in round 1) and Fofana. Chelsea are stuffed with talent even without those two. Recently signed from Villarreal striker Jackson is likely to start as the spearhead up front. Sterling and Mudryk could start too, both have points to prove after not doing very well last spring.

Also, Caicedo could be up for a debut in midfield, while the latest new signing Lavia (who joined only on Friday) might make an appearance off the bench.

Chelsea Predicted Lineups (3-4-2-1):

Sanchez – Disasi, Silva, Colwill – Gusto, Fernandez, Caicedo, Chilwell – Mudryk, Sterling – Jackson

Will Christopher Nkunku play for Chelsea?

Unfortunately, for the Blues and Nkunku himself a knee injury sustained during pre-season means that the forward will be absent at least until October.
