West Ham are considering making a move to get of favor Man United captain Harry Maguire on loan for the remainder of the season, according to recent reports.
Despite making it to last year’s Europa League semi-finals the Hammers currently find themselves struggling in the English Premier League. They currently occupy the final place in the relegation zone and need to find form fast if they are to make it to safety in the final half of the season.
With that in mind, David Moyes’ side are looking to the transfer market to bring in some signings that will bolster the team for the rest of the season. The Irons look set to see one of their center-backs, 32-year old Craig Dawson, depart the club this month as he has widely been linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club have already had one bid rejected by West Ham.
Harry Maguire Could Replace Dawson
West Ham have responded by targeting Man United captain and center-back Harry Maguire. The England defender has been out of favor at his club since the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag during the summer and has been really short of game time.
Other options rumored to be on West Ham’s list of center-back replacements includes Formose Mendy of French Ligue 1 side Lens. The 22-year old Senegalese defender played at the World Cup for his country and at 6’3, he would be a solid addition for the London side. However, the player is under contract with his current club until 2025 and would require a hefty fee to release.
Maguire looks to be the forerunner so far, although there has been some speculation that the center-back would not like to move from Man United, who currently occupy the Champions League places, to a relegation threatened side.
The player was signed by the Red Devils in 2019 from fellow Premier League side Leicester City for a fee of 80 million pounds. That massive fee made Maguire the most expensive defender ever at the time of the transfer.
Maguire Out of Favor at Man United
The defender was a starter for Gareth Southgate at the recent World Cup in Qatar where England exited the tournament at the hands of France at the quarter final stage.
Despite this, the captain of Man United has started just one game from the club’s last four under Ten Hag, an EFL Cup clash versus league one’s Charlton Athletic, and is unlikely to feature heavily as the season goes on.
The Dutch manager has preferred a starting duo of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane at the heart of his backline. Usually a fullback, Luke Shaw started at center-back in United’s 2-1 win over Man City as Maguire looks to have fallen further down the pecking order.
West Ham have found themselves under more and more pressure as they have failed to find their fantastic form of last year under manager Moyes.
The Scottish coach could find himself in danger of the sack if this form continues. Recent reports have suggested that the ex-Man United manager might be fired if his side lose their next game, against to fellow strugglers Everton on Saturday.
The addition of Maguire could prove a sensible move with so much at stake for the club.
