Valencia vs Atletico Madrid H2H: Visitors target 4th straight win over Los Che

Valencia and Atletico Madrid meet at Mestalla this Saturday. It’s 16:15 kick-off local time as two of Spain’s oldest and historically most successful clubs go head to head in La Liga once more. It’s the first match in nearly three weeks for the visitors after their recent game against Sevilla was called off.

Valencia vs Atletico Madrid H2H: The story so far

There have been 180 meetings in all competitions between these two clubs who first met in the early 1930’s in the Segunda Division.

  • Valencia Wins: 61
  • Draws: 48
  • Atletico Wins: 71

This was a relatively even fixture for a long period with Atletico Madrid only moving ahead of Valencia in the all-time H2H in recent years. Los Rojiblancos are unbeaten in 17 league meetings overall in a run that stretches back to a 3-1 defeat at Mestalla in 2014.

That streak is hard to ignore when considering the Valencia vs Atletico Madrid H2H predictions for this game. Diego Simeone has a great recent record against this opposition, although he did lose on 2 of his 3 opening league trips to Mestalla as Atleti boss.

History in the Making

Valencia are hoping to make a bit of history here by recording their first win against Atletico Madrid in nine years. They’ve come close in recent years with 4 of the last 6 meetings at Mestalla ending all square.

Atletico Madrid 3-0 Valencia

The most recent meeting was as comfortable as could be for Atletico Madrid. It took place at the Civitas Metropolitano in March with Antoine Griezmann, Yannick Carrasco and Thomas Lemar on target in an easy win.

Valencia 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Griezmann was also on target when the sides last met at Mestalla and should start again this weekend. The Frenchman scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory in August 2022 to burst Gennaro Gattuso’s early bubble after the Italian’s recent appointment as boss of Los Che.

Atletico Madrid 3-2 Valencia

The 2021/22 season produced two memorable meetings between the clubs. Valencia were well on course to end their winless streak against Atleti when they led 2-0 in the Spanish capital at the break in January 2022, but Atleti came roaring back to win thanks to 90th and 93rd minute goals.

Valencia 3-3 Atletico Madrid

The roles were reversed earlier in that season with Atleti letting a 3-1 lead slip at Mestalla. A dramatic Stoppage Time brace from Hugo Duro ensured Valencia salvaged a 3-3 draw.

Atletico Madrid 3-1 Valencia

There was also a comeback when the clubs met in Madrid in January 2021. Uros Racic put Valencia ahead in the 11th minute but Joao Felix, Angel Correa and Luis Suarez saw eventual champions Atleti grab all the points.

Iconic Moment

Early on in Atletico Madrid’s current 17 game unbeaten run against Valencia, Diego Simeone came head to head with Gary Neville at Mestalla. Goals from Antoine Griezmann, Fernando Torres and Yannick Carrasco sealed a 3-1 win for the side from the capital to pile the pressure on Neville who was sacked only a few weeks later.

Final Prediction

The history points towards Atleti and so does the recent form. Atletico Madrid recorded a real statement win in their last match with the 7-0 demolition of Rayo Vallecano. While they have gone 3 weeks without a fixture, many of their players got minutes under their belt during the international break to keep the match sharpness up.

We’re saying 2-0 to Atleti with Antoine Griezmann to score the first goal.
