Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be interested in acquiring former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

The 24-year-old Frenchman is on Tottenham’s transfer radar after impressing for Marseille in recent seasons.

It is believed that Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are in the lead for the player’s signature, with his current club demanding approximately €32 million (£28 million) for his services.

Although Guendouzi only departed Arsenal permanently a year ago, he played his final match for the club in June 2020. The runner-up of the World Cup fell out of favor with Mikel Arteta and has since acknowledged that he was not the Spaniard’s favorite player.

Spurs Heavily Linked with Move for Guendouzi

Tottenham are contemplating a sensational move for Guendouzi, as reported by Toubache via Get French Football News.

Spurs, who are presently seventh in the Premier League standings and coached by interim boss Ryan Mason, will be judged heavily based on their Premier League finish this year.

Tottenham will qualify for the Europa Conference League if they maintain their current position, but Villa is tied with them on points for eighth place with only two games remaining.

Joining Emery at Villa Park could be more appealing if the team beats Tottenham to seventh place.

Guendouzi’s admiration for Emery is believed to give Villa an advantage in the transfer competition. The midfielder was one of Emery’s first signings as Arsenal manager four years ago and appeared 48 times during his lone full season in command.

Guendouzi was dismissed by Arteta after a poor performance against Brighton in which he allegedly seized Neal Maupay by the throat and boasted about his salary.

Maupay indicated after the game that Arsenal players required more “humility.”

Guendouzi spent the 2020-21 season with Hertha Berlin before experiencing his final season with Marseille, during which he played 56 times and earned his first France cap. His sustained success at the Stade Velodrome has sparked rumors of a return to the Premier League.

Guendouzi: ‘I Didn’t Have The Best Relationship With Him’

Newcastle and West Ham are also believed to be interested in recruiting Guendouzi, whose current contract has two years remaining. If the Frenchman were to join Arsenal’s bitter rivals Tottenham, tensions between him and Arteta could be reignited.

Guendouzi opened up on his relationship with Arteta in October. He said: “Journalists used this excuse to say that we had a bad relationship and that’s why I stopped playing and left Arsenal. Not at all. It’s a gesture like many on the pitch. There’s a lot of tension sometimes, a lot of problems on the pitch. In any case, it has nothing to do with all that.”

“It’s true that I didn’t have the best relationship with him. Beyond that, I always tried to work, always gave the maximum of myself in training and in matches. I still play a few matches with him, I still did great performances.

“He preferred other players and I respect that decision. That’s why, afterwards, I also decided to leave because I was still young, I needed playing time to continue to progress. The most important when you’re young is to play.”
