German midfielder Toni Kroos has confirmed that all is well in his ongoing contract renewal talks with La Liga giants Real Madrid.
The former international has said that “everything is on the right track” when it comes to agreeing a contract extension with the Spanish and European champions.
The midfielder’s current contract at the Santiago Bernabeu expires at the end of June, and his future has been the subject of much speculation in recent months.
Kroos has stated in the past that he is contemplating retiring from football altogether this summer, but he has once again been an integral part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad this year, playing in 41 games and contributing two goals and five assists.
In addition, a recently published report indicated that the veteran midfielder and Real Madrid have agreed to a contract extension through the summer of 2024.
Kroos Confirms Contract Extension On the Way at Real Madrid
Kroos was asked for an update after assisting Real Madrid to defeat Chelsea 2-0 (4-0 on aggregate) at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League quarter final on Tuesday night.
The German revealed that an extension is nearing completion, with the midfielder set to secure a new contract in the Spanish capital.
“Everything is on the right track,” Kroos stated to Prime Video after the 2-0 success over Chelsea in the second leg of the quarter-final in west London.
Kroos participated in 76 minutes of the two-goal victory at Stamford Bridge and has now appeared 10 times in the Champions League this season, registering two assists.
The German has also made 22 appearances in Spain’s top division during the 2022-23 season, contributing two goals and three assists.
Kroos moved to the Bernabeu from German giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2014, and he has scored 27 goals and contributed 88 assists in 406 appearances for the Spanish heavyweights in his glittering career at the club so far.
The German has won three La Liga titles, three Spanish Super Cups, four Champions League titles, three UEFA Super Cups, and five Club World Cups during a tremendously successful period at Real, where he has been a starting midfielder alongside Luka Modric for much of his time there.
Kroos and Real Madrid Still in Contention for Trophies this Season
Los Blancos are still in contention to win the Champions League and Copa del Rey this season, but they trail Barcelona by 11 points in the La Liga standings.
However, that did not stop them getting the better of their arch-rivals when they last met two weeks ago.
Real defeated the Blaugrana 4-0 in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final at Camp Nou (4-1 on aggregate) in a real show of strength.
Several more players could be offered contract extensions by Real ahead of next season.
Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos, Luka Modric, Nacho, and Mariano Diaz are also coming close to the end of their contracts with the Spanish champions and Los Blancos will have to ensure they secure the futures of those they wish to retain.
Benzema and Modric are expected to follow Kroos in signing contract extensions, but the futures of Asensio, Ceballos, Nacho, and Mariano remain uncertain.
