Argentina will be one of the favorites to win the World Cup in Qatar and they will have a tremendous amount of support while embarking on their adventure. This will be the last World Cup participation for Lionel Messi and after finally winning the Copa America title for his country, the only tournament left to win is the World Cup.
It’s been 37 years since the last time Argentina took home the World Cup trophy and it was Diego Armando Maradona who won it in 1986. The sad part is that this is going to be the first World Cup since the great Diego passed away and many people in Argentina feel the connection with their late star.
Lionel Messi has been the face of the national team for over a decade, at the club level he has won everything he could have, but when it comes to his national team, things haven’t gone to plan. At the latest Copa America tournament that fact has finally changed, Argentina won their long-awaited title, and now only the World Cup remains to end Messi’s tenure in his country’s jersey.
The Argentine Embassy in Doha, Qatar is getting ready for what is to come in the next month or so. Ambassador Guillermo Nicolas spoke about what is expected from the fans that will travel to the Arab country.
‘We have high hopes and expectations from our national team, especially because it will be the first tournament since the passing of Diego Armando Maradona who gave us the greatest World Cup goal ever scored. Our passion and that special feeling we have for our country drive us forward, and we expect approximately 35,000 Argentines to descend into Qatar for the World Cup.’
Messi’s final tournament
All the fans that will be traveling to the World Cup will have assistance from their Consulate to help them in any way they need during their stay in Qatar.
Many Argentines believe that this World Cup will be special because of where it is being hosted. Qatar is the first Arab nation to organize the biggest tournament in the world, and plenty has been done to make sure this is the world’s premier event.
Argentina will play in the group alongside Poland, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. As one would suspect, they will be the favorites to win the group and move to the playoffs. Four years ago they had a World Cup that they wanted to forget very quickly, but now it seems there is a new energy inside the team led by the great Lionel Messi.
After having a below-average season last year for PSG, Messi has been in terrific form this year, and many pundits already predict that once again he will be one to watch at the Balon d’Or awards next year. Especially, if he takes this World Cup by storm.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni recently announced a big squad of 48 players which will eventually be reduced to the necessary 26 that will travel to Qatar. There shouldn’t be many surprises, players that won the Copa America will in essence get the chance to win another tournament, this time the biggest of them all.
