‘We need him’ – Erik ten Hag urges Man United star to sign new contract

Man United manager Erik ten Hag has urged Marcus Rashford to extend his current deal with the club.

As reported by LiveScore, the manager says the Red Devils need their star man to commit his future to Man United if they are to have any chance of succeeding.

Rashford is in sensational form of late, with the attacker currently on 17 goals in all competitions this season.

Man United ‘need’ Rashford to succeed

The Man United forward went through a very public criticism of his displays not so long ago, with England manager Gareth Southgate dropping him from the national team due to his struggles at Old Trafford.

But the 25-year-old has been sensational under Ten Hag, and looks set to regain his place in the England setup very soon. He now has eight goals in his last eight games, and is unsurprisingly Man United’s top scorer this season.

The lethal forward, who has been utilised in various positions in the final third, is currently averaging a goal every 124 minutes. Importantly for Ten Hag and indeed Man United supporters, Rashford is tied down to the club until 2024, but that is not long enough for the boss.

The man in the dugout is desperate for his attacking star to commit his long-term future to the club, and is quietly confident that Rashford will do just that.

“This is the best place to be because we want to construct the best team – first in England, then Europe, then the world,” said Ten Hag.

“It is confidential, talks between clubs and players, [but] he understands Manchester United is his club and also in this environment, this team, he is playing his best football.

“He is improving, he is giving 100%. He can bring his qualities and this team can help him be in the right position to score goals.

“The team is constructed so that his qualities come to the fore. He knows he is important for us and if we want to succeed, we need him.”

Man United winger ‘can do better’

One Man United attacker that isn’t enjoying such a fine period is Brazil star Antony, who has struggled for form after a lightning start at Old Trafford.

The winger followed Ten Hag from Dutch side Ajax last summer, making an immediate impact with three goals in his first three Premier League games.

But the goals in the English top flight have stopped there for Antony, as his tally remains on three goals from his 11 league games. The winger has also netted once in the League Cup and once in the FA Cup this season.

While his manager is certainly not concerned by the dip in form, Ten Hag knows the winger can offer more, and has explained exactly how this can be achieved.

“He is not losing games,” said Ten Hag. “He is playing and the team is winning and that already gives a message of how well he is performing. He can do better. I see space for improvement, and we want him to be more direct.”
