Spurs attempt to hijack major Premier League transfer

Tottenham Hotspur are attempting to hijack Everton’s move for Arnaut Danjuma after Frank Lampard’s sacking put the transfer in doubt. According to SkySports, Lampard had played a key role in persuading the Villareal forward to swap Eastern Spain for Merseyside.

Danjuma has been in England for a couple of days and looked set to complete a loan switch to Everton but late interest from Antonio Conte and Tottenham has thrown the move into serious doubt. It is understood that Danjuma is now in London with his agent to hold talks with the North London club.

Everton, who believed the deal was all but done, will now be panicking especially as Tottenham have gone as far as booking in a medical for the Netherlands international.

The move for Danjuma would have given Everton a much-needed boost after a season of misery on and off the pitch. With the club now managerless, though, the forward may well be thinking that a move elsewhere would benefit him more after initially being attracted to the challenge of keeping the Toffees in the Premier League.

The proposed deal to Everton was rumoured to not include an obligation or option to buy although those terms may well change if he signs for Tottenham instead. His signing would offer Antonio Conte more options in the forward positions as he seeks to push his club into the Premier League’s top four.

Things go bad to worse for Everton

If the Everton board fails to get the Danjuma signing over the line then protests against them are only going to increase. In recent weeks, the situation has gotten so severe that board members were instructed to stay away from Goodison Park for “their own safety”.

The sacking of Lampard means that owner, Farhad Moshiri, has gone through six managers in seven years on Merseyside, and calls for him to go are only getting louder.

On Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher doubled down on his opinion that Everton are the “worst run club in the country” with many Evertonians agreeing. Failure to sign a player who was in Merseyside to complete the deal is only going to add to the theory that the board are inept when it comes to running a successful football club.

This potential transfer collapse could also deter prospective managers from taking up the managerial post at Goodison Park. Marcelo Bielsa, one of the rumoured front runners, has reportedly told Everton chiefs that the current squad of players are too slow to play his brand of football meaning recruitment would be necessary if they were to hire the Argentinian. Danjuma, a pacey winger, may well have even been a target with Bielsa in mind.

A chance worth taking for Spurs

For Spurs, the opportunity to sign another forward player on loan for six months is a no-brainer. They have been screaming out at times this season for an alternative to Son, Richarlison, and Kulusevski and Danjuma offers something different to all three.

His blistering pace would complement Harry Kane perfectly and it’s easy to see why Conte would be interested in him. He can play anywhere across the front three and should help add goals to a struggling Tottenham side.

Although he has fallen out of favour at Villareal this season, he netted 16 goals and provided four assists in 34 appearances across all competitions in 2021/22.
