Banyana Banyana’s first-ever World Cup knockout experience ended in a 0-2 defeat vs the mighty Netherlands. For the 4th consecutive game, the Oranje made a sweet start and were in front inside 10 minutes. Man City’s Jill Roord scored her 4th goal of the tournament. Here’s how it all happened.

The Netherlands charged forward with vigour from the off. They laid siege on South Africa’s box and with their 3rd good chance inside the opening 10 minutes Roord gave them the lead. Her close-range header was precise and left Smith helpless.
Banyana Banyana tried to take the fight back to the Dutch defenders after that. Too many mistakes and an early injury to one of their best players Seoposenwe prevented them from creating much.
The second half began similarly. The Netherlands jumped out of the block for the resumption with extra aggression. Only a marginal offside denied Lieke Martens a second goal when she put the ball into the back of the net.
Roode remained unplayable. She continued to ballet dance past 2-3 challenges every time she was on the ball. Her runs and inch-perfect passes kept Banyana Banyana on their toes. Still, the brave South African women had their moments too.
On two occasions only diving saves from Van Domselaar denied the dangerous Kgatlana. Receiving the warning and acting on it the Dutch killed the match shortly past the hour mark. South Africa’s goalie Smith showed buttery fingers when failing to deal with Beerensteyn’s shot. Once it got to 2-0 the Netherlands calmly saw off the final 20 minutes.
Despite the defeat South Africa overachieved in this tournament and they must feel very proud of themselves. The memories for all the women involved will be strong and ever-lasting. Banyana Banyana bow out without any regrets.
