According to reports, Real Madrid’s pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has suffered a setback.
Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni have both moved to the Bernabeu in recent transfer windows, demonstrating that Los Blancos are no strangers to acquiring new faces in the middle of the field.
Yet, due to Luka Modric’s advanced age and Toni Kroos’ uncertain long-term future with the club, it may be necessary to find replacements for two crucial players.
The Spanish giants have kept an eye on some of the top midfield talent across the European top-flights in order to bring someone in the door should one, or both, of their veteran midfielders choose to leave or retire.
Real Madrid have long been connected with a move for Jude Bellingham, but fresh reports indicate that the European champions may wait before making a high-priced offer for the English international.
Guimaraes Happy to Stay Tyneside
As of now, it is uncertain how Real’s transfer plans for 2023-2024 will play out, although Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes is heavily rumored to be another player on their radar.
After fourteen months at St. James’ Park, the Brazilian international has established himself as Newcastle’s most prominent player, scoring nine goals and assisting on four others from center midfield.
Although having a contract through 2026, Guimaraes has been linked with a move to a more prestigious club, which may become more likely if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League by the end of this season.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle is yet optimistic that they will be able to reach a new contract with the 25-year-old.
According to the soccer outlet, the Magpies’ leadership are willing to offer the former Lyon player a lucrative new contract to retain him at St. James’ Park.
At this point in his career, Guimaraes is rumored to be happy with his life on Tyneside and would not be overly eager to leave his new club.
Newcastle paid approximately £40 million for Guimaraes in January 2022, and if they ever considered selling their most valued asset, they would demand a price considerably over that amount.
Newcastle Struggle to Maintain Great Form for Run-In
While Newcastle have had a successful season, they are winless in their last five Premier League matches and recently lost the EFL Cup final.
Their form has stuttered at a crucial time in the English top flight and they will have to make a quick recovery if they are to slide into the European places for next season.
Eddie Howe’s squad is currently in sixth place in the Premier League rankings, four points behind fourth place with two games remaining in hand over Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur.
A resurgent Liverpool are positioned just ahead of the Geordies by a single point after their spectacular seven nil defeat of arch rivals Manchester United on Sunday evening.
The Reds looked to be out of the running for the European places given their rollercoaster form all season. But now, Jurgen Klopp’s men look to be well in the race for the Champions League and Europa League places and have given Newcastle an extra opponent to consider in the run in to the end of the season.
