Championship leaders Burnley are considering making Nathan Tella’s loan deal from Southampton permanent this summer, according to Football Insider.
Vincent Kompany desires to keep the 23-year-old at Turf Moor and is preparing a summer offer.
Potential Tella Signing Part of ‘Major Changes’ at EPL Hopefuls
As Burnley prepare for their return to the Premier League, reports have hinted that signing Tella would be part of “major changes” to the team.
In the event of promotion, it is anticipated that Kompany will have a sizable war chest to spend in the summer transfer window, with Tella a major priority.
If Southampton were relegated from the Premier League, Burnley’s chances of acquiring the Saints’ winger would improve.
The Clarets are 17 points ahead of the playoffs in the promotion race, while Southampton sit one point inside the Premier League relegation zone.
This season, Tella has scored 14 goals and recorded three assists in 37 appearances for Burnley.
He joined the Lancashire club on a season-long loan last summer, with no purchase option included.
In January, Kompany reunited the winger with old teammate Michael Obafemi, who has already scored twice in five games.
Former Arsenal youth player has made 41 appearances for Southampton, primarily as a substitute, scoring only twice.
His St. Mary’s Stadium contract is valid until June 2025.
The midfielder has developed quite a reputation for scoring from free-kicks close to goal and his talents have often scared opponents into not making challenges on the edge of their box.
Ward Prowse’s talents from set pieces would be welcome at any side and would cost the Saints a lot of goals.
However, if they are relegated, Southampton may have little choice but to sell him and may not get a fee that is equal to how they value the English midfielder.
Saints Set to Lose Prominent Midfielder
If Tottenham Hotspur have their way, it appears that Southampton will lose another star this summer among their relegation worries.
Several sources indicate that Tottenham is monitoring Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse ahead of a possible summer transfer.
It is believed that if the Saints are relegated to the Championship this season, it will be tough for them to retain the 28-year-old.
Longtime admirers Aston Villa are still interested in acquiring Ward-Prowse and are monitoring his situation at Southampton.
The England international became the Saints’ all-time Premier League appearances leader (330) after beginning Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Leicester (4 March).
Ward-Prowse, who was described as “phenomenal” by former colleague Charlie Austin last summer (2022), has almost three years remaining on his Saint Mary’s Stadium deal.
The 28-year-old reportedly earns £100,000 each week on the southern coast.
He has played every minute of Premier League action this season, scoring six goals and registering two assists.
The midfielder has scored 17 goals from free kicks in the top tier, leaving him one goal below David Beckham’s all-time record.
Since graduating from the club’s academy, Ward-Prowse has amassed 52 goals and 51 assists in nearly 400 games for Southampton.
Recent injuries to midfielders Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur have hampered Spurs and Antonio Conte will seek further backup in the next transfer window.
