The icing on the Ligue 1 Gameweek six cake is the first Le Classique of the season as Paris Saint-Germain welcome Marseille to the Parc de Princes on Sunday night. The head-to-head record has tipped in favour of the hosts in recent years, here we see the overall and recent record.
This Sunday marks the 106th official meeting between the sides, a rivalry that was born in 1971 when Les Parisiens played their first season in the top division.

This rivalry was one-side in the 1970s as the more established Marseille dominated the early exchanges, winning seven of the first nine meetings. Paris Saint-Germain finally recorded a win in 1978, a crushing 5-1 triumph.
- Paris Saint-Germain wins: 48
- Draws: 23
- Marseille wins: 34
Since the mid 1980s, when the Red and Blues won their first top division title, it has been a more heated contest and the term Le Classique was coined. Les Olympiens were victorious through most of the 1990s, only losing twice in 16 encounters. But the last ten years has seen the balance shift in favour of the Qatari-owned club, in fact Marseille have just one Ligue 1 win since 2012.
History in the making
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the all-time top scorer in Le Classique, the Swedish striker racked up 11 goals against Marseille during his successful spell in Paris. A club legend, many of his records seemed untouchable until the arrival of Kylian Mbappé. The 24 year old has already raced to nine goals, a hattrick on Sunday would see him surpass Ibra.

Marseille 2-1 Paris-Saint Germain (08/02/2023)
The Coupe de France Last 16 game was a historic win for the hosts in a packed Stade Vélodrome, the first time they’d won at home in this competition. Lionel Messi and Neymar weren’t enough for Alexis Sánchez and company.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Marseille (17/04/2022)
The Neymar and Mbappé combination clicked to sink Marseille despite having less possession than the visitors. The fans hardly celebrated though, still stung by the latest Champions League exit to Real Madrid.
Marseille 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain (24/10/2021)
The last time Marseille earned anything from Le Classique, and managed to stop Paris Saint-Germain from scoring. One reason was the excellent performance of a young William Saliba at the heart of the home defence.
Paris Saint-Germain vs Marseille final prediction
Despite the absence of Neymar and Lionel Messi, who were key parts of the attacking machinery in previous meetings, there is still expectancy of a home win. Mbappé relishes this fixture, and has a record on the horizon which will surely motivate him further. Marseille haven’t been strong defensively this season which makes things tough here.
While we shouldn’t rule out Marseille scoring, the recent history suggests that Paris Saint-Germain can score two (or more) making this a likely home win. 3-1.
