Then again, it’s still only a few days since England did lose to France in the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar 2022. So we can’t expect such a prompt press release, as has been the case with managers from other nations. Anyway, our goal here is to look at the next England manager odds for possible replacements. So let’s get right into it.
Next England Manager Odds
Mauricio Pochettino
4/1
Thomas Tuchel
5/1
Brendan Rodgers
7/1
Eddie Howe
10/1
Graham Potter
14/1
We all know how cutthroat the world of football can be. And there are few jobs that are as spotlighted as the England manager role. On that note, the UK’s leading bookmakers have published lists of various guys who could swoop in and take the job. Here are the top five:
Mauricio Pochettino – 4/1
Pochettino is familiar with English football and what it’s all about. After all, he was the manager of Tottenham from 2014-2019. Many Tottenham fans loved his approach to the game and the subsequent style of football that he brought to the squad. This caught the eye of PSG in 2021, although Pochettino has since left his role as the PSG manager in 2022. Because of that, Pochettino is completely freed up to come in and take the job, which is why he is the top candidate.
Thomas Tuchel – 5/1
Thomas Tuchel is another guy who many have tipped to take the job. That’s why he is up there in second place concerning the next England manager odds. Of course, Tuchel was previously the manager of Chelsea, even if he was only there from 2021-2022. But prior to that, Tuchel has also managed PSG as well as Borussia Dortmund. Clearly, Tuchel has experience with the biggest clubs and the biggest players in the game. And much like Pochettino, he has no permanent coaching role at the moment.
Brendan Rodgers – 7/1
You will probably notice a pattern emerging as we work through the top five candidates here. Brendan Rodgers has also been the manager of a top-level Premier League club in the past, as reflected in his years at Liverpool from 2012-2015. Yet unlike the previous two guys, Rodgers is now back managing a Premier League, this time with Leicester City. So he currently has a permanent role at a domestic club, which is probably why his odds are down at 8.00.
Eddie Howe – 10/1
Eddie Howe actually has many similarities to Gareth Southgate concerning his playing career. He was also a defender, yet his managerial style doesn’t seem quite as defensive as Southgate’s. At the moment, Eddie Howe is the manager of Newcastle United, and they are having a great season in the Premier League. Howe is also the only Englishman that is listed up until this point, which may or may not have an impact.
Graham Potter – 14/1
Interestingly, Graham Potter came in at Chelsea to replace Tuchel, who is second in the line of favourites to replace Southgate. The reason that Potter is all the way down at 15.00 odds is that he has the least experience in managing top-level clubs of the bunch. After all, he’s only been at Chelsea for a few months. Prior to that, Potter managed Brighton and Swansea. And concerning his playing career, he was a left-back, so he may bring a defensive mindset to the squad.
Will Southgate leave the England manager job?
Did you know that in the build-up to the World Cup, the Southgate sacked odds dropped all the way down to 5.00? Comparing those Southgate odds with the odds shown in the list of replacements, this would mean the same probability that he gets sacked as Pochettino taking the job. However, the odds of Southgate being sacked aren’t actually listed on most sites. That’s because Southgate’s job isn’t necessarily under threat. It’s more a case of whether or not he chooses to leave the role, which we feel is likely.
He’s already had a great run as the England manager, making the semis of the World Cup in 2018, the final of the Euros in 2021 (2020 competition), and the quarters of the 2022 World Cup. And for us, he will recognize that a manager with a more attacking mindset is needed with the current group of players.
Next England Manager Prediction
At the end of the day, if anyone is to replace Southgate, we think it will be Pochettino. He has actual World Cup experience as a player, and his managerial style is suitable for the current bunch of players. Pochettino also has the best resume at the club level, hence we are swayed towards him over the others.
