What has happened to Al Hilal manager Jorge Jesus?
After watching their club make massive summer signings, such as Neymar, Ruben Neves, Kalidou Koulibaly and Aleksandr Mitrovic, the expectations of Al Hilal fans have reached a very high level. Now, their hardcore supporters want the club to win every possible match, knowing the massive strength of the squad.
To his credit, Jesus has actually done a pretty decent job with this squad. Since taking over the managerial role in July, he’s only lost two of 14 games. However, too many draws have left fans frustrated. Some supporters reportedly booed the manager after their 1-1 draw to Damac on Thursday. Before this, the draw in the AFC Champions League opener against Navbahor at home also annoyed fans.
Not only are supporters annoyed with the draws, but their style of play under the current coach is not considered to be the kind of attacking football that such a transfer window should produce. In turn, there are now calls for Jesus to be sacked and replaced. The Portuguese manager is now under some real pressure, knowing that dropping points in the next game could seal his fate at the club.
Can Ramon Diaz become the next Al Hilal manager?
Amid the uncertainty around Jorge’s future at Al Hilal, some fans have apparently already identified the ideal replacement for him. This is someone managing in the Brasileiro in their former manager Ramon Diaz. The 64-year-old, nicknamed ‘El Pelado’ (Baldy) had a glittering playing career, playing for Napoli, Inter Milan and even AS Monaco under Arsene Wenger.
He has over 28 years of managerial experience having started his coaching career in 1995. Diaz is currently the manager of Brazilian side Vasco da Gama, whom he joined after leaving the Saudi club following the tragic death of his wife earlier this year.
The Argentine gaffer played a key role in helping them win Saudi Arabia’s domestic knockout competition, the King Cup, and reach the AFC Champions League final last season. And there also are some other obvious reasons why he can be an ideal replacement for Jesus.
He can get the best out of Neymar
Neymar is yet to properly adapt to his new life at Al Hilal and doesn’t seem that comfortable under the current set-up. He has two assists in three games but still looks a bit rusty in this system. The possible arrival of Diaz can change all that.
Not only does his playing style encourage the attacking players more freedom to dictate matches, take risks and be more adventurous – but he knows how to work with Brazilian players. Apart from his current stint at Vasco, the 64-year-old has also worked at Brazil side Botafago in the past. Diaz’s fluid attacking style can also benefit Mitrovic and Neves.
He knows the club inside and out
Diaz has been Al Hilal’s manager in two separate stints in his career. In both of them, he’s guided them to success. He helped them reach the ACL finals on two separate occasions (2017, 2022) and also won the Saudi Pro League with them in 2016/17.
He is an icon at the club and knows exactly what it takes to succeed in Asian football. The Argentine gaffer loves encouraging attacking football, often shaping his teams in a 4-3-3 formation. Considering the impressive work he’s done in the past, Diaz can probably work wonders with this star-studded Al Hilal side and help them reach new heights.
For now, it remains to be seen if the Al Hilal management makes a decision to sack Jesus. But if you ask some of their fervent fans, the next Al Hilal manager should be Ramon Diaz.
