Newcastle United vs Burnley player ratings – Match summary and highlights
Burnley had a game plan of passing through the press of Newcastle. Crucial to this were the midfield three and the attacking runs of their wide players. While they made it out on occasion, it was more often than not playing into the hands of Newcastle, who pressed relentlessly.
A combination of trapping Burnley inside a press and rapid counter-attacking was ultimately key for Newcastle once again. While their formula is well known now, breaking it down is still proving difficult for sides. Newcastle continued to cause all sorts of problems, especially from Gordon on the left, as his attack was rewarded with a penalty to make it 2-0 late on.
Player of the match: Trippier
Trippier continues to look like one of the best signings for Newcastle since the takeover, even in their history. Trippier controlled the right side of the pitch and every time he crossed the ball, Burnley fans held their breath. While he hung back later in the game when Odobert came on, his deliveries were as consistent as ever.
