‘I knew it was right for me’ – Marcel Sabitzer explains last-minute Man Utd move

New Man Utd man Marcel Sabitzer has explained the reasoning behind his last-minute move to the Premier League club.

The Bayern Munich midfielder joined Erik ten Hag’s side on loan from the German outfit for the remainder of the season on Deadline Day of the January transfer window.

The move comes after Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen was ruled out for a number of months with an ankle injury sustained in the recent FA Cup tie with Reading.

Sabitzer has seemingly now been brought in as immediate cover for Eriksen, as Man Utd continue their impressive momentum in all competitions under manager Ten Hag.

Sabitzer explains Man Utd move

The Austrian’s career has somewhat stalled in recent times, with the midfielder captaining and starring for RB Leipzig before his move to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich in 2021.

He went from being a regular starter at Leipzig to a regular on the substitute bench at Munich, with the majority of his 32 appearances in all competitions last season coming from the bench.

His goals and assists tallies of nine and seven in the 2020/21 season dropped to one and one respectively in 2021/22, with the midfielder also on one assist and one goal for the current campaign.

A transfer to Old Trafford could, however, reignite his career, with Sabitzer explaining that the last-minute decision to move to Man Utd was undoubtedly the right one to make.

Sabitzer told the Man Utd website: “Sometimes in life you have to make quick and important decisions. From the moment I heard about this opportunity I knew it was right for me.  I am a competitive player; I want to win and help the club achieve its aims this season.

“I feel that I am at my peak as a player, and that I can contribute a lot of experience and energy to the squad. I am excited to start with my new teammates and manager and to show my qualities to Manchester United fans.”

Man Utd had been eyeing Sabitzer for a ‘long time’

Man Utd have made several impressive signings under Ten Hag, with the manager bringing in the likes of Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Eriksen. All have hit the ground running at their new club, with loan signing Wout Weghorst also fitting into Ten Hag’s system well.

The Red Devils are enjoying a fine campaign under their new manager, and are currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table, level on points with Newcastle in third.

The Manchester outfit are also still in the FA Cup and Europa League, while they have a strong chance of securing a spot in the League Cup final, going into tonight’s semi-final second-leg meeting with Nottingham Forest with a 3-0 aggregate lead.

Their new signing Sabitzer looks set to help the club continue their strong season, with Man Utd Football Director John Murtough welcoming the Austrian to Manchester, saying: “Marcel is a player that we have watched for a long time.

“The opportunity arose quickly, and we knew that he was someone with the ability and character to make an impact. He adds further quality to our squad and experience to the dressing room, and all of us are pleased to be welcoming him to Manchester United.”
