A new report has indicated that contract talks between Manchester United and goalkeeper David de Gea are “ongoing.”
The 32-year-old is presently enjoying his 12th season as a Red Devils player, but his long-term future has been put into question since his contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the current campaign.
De Gea is considered to be Man United’s highest-earning player, earning an estimated £375,000 per week, but the 20-time English Premier League champions are eager to decrease his pay after supposedly imposing a £200,000 salary ceiling at the club following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.
De Gea’s Contract Renewal Talks ‘Ongoing’
The current longest-serving member of the Red Devils’ roster, the Spanish goalkeeper is rumored to be willing to take a hefty pay reduction to continue at Old Trafford.
Last month, De Gea announced his intention to retire with Manchester United at the end of his career and gave a favorable update on contract negotiations with the club.
Speaking with Sky Sports News earlier this year about contract negotiations with the club, De Gea stated, “I’m very relaxed. I just focus on training, perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.”
“I hope (to stay for the rest of my career),” De Gea added, “I was saying this is my club, I’ve been here many, many years and it’s a huge honor to be here and I’m so happy here.”
According to an update this week from Italian soccer transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, De Gea and Manchester United are in “ongoing” contract negotiations.
The journalist added that United have not triggered the 12-month extension in the goalkeeper’s contract because they are attempting to negotiate a wage reduction with the goalie, with both parties hoping to finalize terms “soon.”
The Italian journalist also asserts that Man United’s top priorities are extending the contracts of Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot and “accelerating” Alejandro Garnacho’s contract negotiations.
De Gea’s Glittering Man United Career
De Gea joined Manchester United from Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2011 for about £18.9 million, a British record for a goalkeeper.
The 45-time Spain international has subsequently made a total of 524 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions and has won eight major trophies, with Sunday’s EFL Cup victory being his most recent addition.
After Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Wembley, David de Gea recorded his 181st clean sheet for the club, overtaking the famous Peter Schmeichel to set a new record.
If Manchester United are unable to reach a contract extension with David de Gea in the coming months, Brentford goalkeeper David Raya and Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier have reportedly been named as possible summer targets.
Following their FA Cup win, Erik ten Hag’s side face a tough trip to Anfield where they face arch rivals Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League.
The Red Devils will fancy their chances are perhaps greater than usual as the Reds have really struggled in all competitions this season.
